Recently, I took a trip to Montreal with my sons to see the eclipse. But there was one thing on my must-do list: visit the TriStar Gym. It’s where George St. Pierre, one of the MMA greats, trained under Firas Zahabi. The gym wasn’t easy to find—after dealing with a parking lot full of potholes and circling the block, we finally realized it was tucked away on the third floor of an unremarkable building. Inside, it was large but worn, much like the martial arts gyms I remembered from my youth.
Seeing this gym in all its simplicity made something click. We’re in an age where shiny, high-tech gyms are everywhere, and sure, they’re nice. But TriStar’s modest setup proves that you don’t need all that flash to produce champions. It’s a lesson in what really matters: the people, their passion, and their dedication to the craft. It reminded me of something Tony Robbins once said, “It’s not about resources, it’s about resourcefulness.”
I brought my sons along, who’ve only seen the newer gyms and were surprised to see a top MMA fighter and trainer coming from such a basic place. It was an eye-opener for them and a reminder for me. Having been in and out of various martial arts gyms, seeing TriStar brought it all home.
So here’s the takeaway for all of us, no matter what we’re aiming to achieve: Success isn’t about having the best of everything. It’s about making the best of what you have. That’s the true key to greatness.
