Statements like this convict something in me.
Should students have opportunities to learn important life skills by the time they graduate? Absolutely.
Should students be taught in a way they can apply the content they are learning in schools to real life situations? Absolutely.
Should these skills be the responsibility of teachers who are already trying to teach to all of the other things that are mandated, like standards and standardized tests? Not if the school system doesn’t change first.
I learned cooking from my mom, basic home repair from my dad, self-defense from my brothers, and so on…
Why should it be the responsibility of teachers to teach skills that were once taught in the home?
