?? Last week, JMA, UAW and other coalition partners appeared at an LA Metro board meeting where they discussed our lawsuit against LA Metro in closed session. We gave testimony and urged the board to re-bid a contract awarded to Hyundai Rotem. ?? In case you missed it, we filed a lawsuit against LA Metro for violating state and federal open bidding laws in a $730M railcar contract awarded to Hyundai Rotem. ?? LA Metro awarded Hyundai Rotem the contract despite their failure to meet important job and wage requirements under the Manufacturing Careers Policy. Hyundai was allowed to alter their proposal behind closed doors—an opportunity NOT extended to other bidders. JMA is demanding a fair rebid to ensure public dollars go towards good jobs and fair competition. This week's legislative news for rail centers around ongoing discussions in Congress about rail safety. A recent House subcommittee hearing focused on a new bill, the "Railroad Safety Enhancement Act," which aims to address several safety issues. The bill proposes requiring Class I railroads to participate in the Federal Railroad Administration’s Confidential Close Call Reporting System, authorizing additional funding for programs like the Railroad Grade Crossing Elimination Program, and mandating the installation of telematics systems on cars carrying hazardous materials. It also retains a controversial provision requiring a two-person crew for most freight trains, which has seen opposition from some lawmakers but support from rail unions and safety advocates. The bill's progression has been influenced by recent incidents, like the East Palestine, Ohio derailment in February 2023. The final report from the National Transportation Safety Board on that derailment is expected in 2024 and is likely to impact future legislative actions on rail safety. The Senate has a similar bill that stalled due to opposition but may see renewed efforts to advance it after the House discussions this week. In addition, stakeholders continue to debate the balance between regulatory requirements and industry-driven safety improvements, as well as how best to enhance rail safety without overly burdening rail operators. The Texas Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (TSLRRA) ) advocates for short line and regional railroads in Texas. They focus on promoting policies, offering education and training, and fostering collaboration to support these railroads. TGB Group, LLC supports Texas Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (TSLRRA) 's mission because short line railroads are crucial for connecting rural areas to the national freight network. This connection boosts local and regional economies by enhancing transportation and logistics. Key Functions of TSLRRA: Advocacy: TSLRRA works to advance policies at both state and federal levels that benefit short line and regional railroads. This includes lobbying for favorable legislation, regulatory changes, and funding opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, and competitiveness. Education and Training: The association offers training and resources to ensure safe and efficient railroad operations. This includes safety training, regulatory workshops, and updates on industry best practices. Networking and Collaboration: TSLRRA provides a platform for its members to connect and collaborate, including short line railroads, industry suppliers, and other stakeholders. #Railroads #Transportation #Logistics #EconomicDevelopment #Advocacy #Education #Networking #TGBGroup #TSLRRA #ShortLineRailroads #RegionalRailroads

Throwback to this month back in 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed the Staggers Rail Act into law. This legislation, named for Congressman Harley Staggers of West Virginia, revolutionized the business of #railroads. Passed by the 96th Congress, the act contained revolutionary regulatory reforms. Railroads were given more freedom to set their own prices and tailor services to meet specific shipper needs. The Staggers Rail Act reforms were oriented toward improving efficiency, providing incentives for innovation, and creating a renewed rail alternative to trucks. Free to innovate, the nation’s #freight railroads operated more efficiently and safely than ever before. Railroads continue to deliver for American industry and consumers.? Railroads do big things. To see full rail renationalisation is a dream come true. The logical move of ending this natural monopoly and running our railways as a single, integrated public service is a welcome one. Not so much the British Rail of old, more the European norm of efficiency and service.

According to 'a senior Downing Street source' it appears that Starmer's Labour Government preference is to now exclude Harland & Wolff from the FSS contract, and have Navantia, S.A., S.M.E build all 3 ships entirely in Spain! The Mail on Sunday are reporting a 'senior Downing Street source' has said: "There are several options which include UK companies buying the company, but they will want to re-negotiate the work which will cost the UK taxpayer and likely delay production and delivery of the ships. The preferred option is for Navantia, who have the contract to now fabricate, assemble and deliver the ships on time and within budget." National Shipbuilding Office any comment on the validity of this 'senior Downing Street source' statement? Has the FSS contract been renegotiated at any point since it was originally awarded to enable this? #HandW #FSS #FLEETSOLIDSUPPORT #RFA #BRITISHSHIPBUILDING #DEBACLE https://lnkd.in/evJADHiu

A potential order for 10 new Elizabeth Line trains for Transport for London could help save jobs in Derby! Commenting on the developments, Darren Caplan, chief executive of the Railway Industry Association said: “Suppliers across the UK will hope current discussions between Ministers and all train manufacturers achieve a positive outcome. The future of rail businesses of all sizes, factories and jobs depends on the decisions taken by the Government now. “Immediate solutions are clearly needed to mitigate short-term risks, and sustain jobs and UK capability. But the Government urgently needs to bring forward invitations to tender for new procurements in the medium term and listen to industry proposals which have called for a level playing field for manufacturers to bid for the £3.6 billion of upcoming work orders.” What are your thoughts on these developments? Let us know below?? https://lnkd.in/e8s8XvPu

It also authorizes an additional $1 billion for the Railroad Grade Crossing Elimination Program and $100 million annually for a FRA grant program to install railcar telematics systems and gateway devices on cars carrying hazardous materials. ? "MTA NSW is urging the state government to invest in training programs and infrastructure development to benefit consumers, automotive businesses, and their staff,” says MTA NSW chief executive Stavros Yallouridis. Through our state budget submission, we have outlined a comprehensive wish list aimed at supporting the evolving needs of the state's automotive industry and accelerating the transition to EVs. Our submission focuses on three main areas: ● workforce development ● consumer incentives for EVs ● and infrastructure expansion We believe if the NSW government doesn’t soon invest in attracting skilled workers and adequate training opportunities, the industry may buckle under the pressure of the evolving automotive landscape. Let's talk about potential new ways of recruiting, selecting, testing and training our train drivers. It is a debate the industry needs to have to make sure we are always raising our safety and quality game and always giving these critical staff the very best support. Maybe the old way is the best way, but we shouldn't be frightened to ask the question and challenge ourselves because some don't want change. If we don't have the honest discussion and challenge about what we are doing today, how can we as industry leaders, key stakeholders and statutory directors know we are doing as well as we could be? I think there are better, more effective and efficient ways to do it which can improve the availability, confidence and competence of train drivers across the UK. And I know others agree. If you are interested in the discussion or finding out how we can help you, get in touch. [email protected] Check out page 44 in this months Rail Director too. https://lnkd.in/evPwbgTA
