Nursing as “STEM,” my take: From the first day of nursing school, I knew I wanted to practice in the neonatal intensive care unit. Why? The TECH. I was fascinated by the technology of the NICU. The incubators that managed temperature and humidity with such exactitude. The multiple intravenous medications. As my studies continued, I learned more and more about the incredible technology of the NICU. These efforts led to a rare and coveted position as a new graduate in the NICU. From there, my technological knowledge and eventual mastery only grew. Oscillating ventilators, nitric oxide infusions, intravenous albumin…all of this, and so much more, became an integral part of my practice as a developing expert NICU nurse. Within that first year, my entrancement with technology was completely erased. Technology became a thing, something to be managed, corrected, and, often, cursed. Very quickly, technology became just another tool of my trade. I never lost my passion for the NICU. Technology was rapidly replaced as the focus of my attention by … the patient. The actual patient. The tiny, delicate, scrappy little humans that I cared for hour after hour, night after night. The premature neonate requires immense technology for any chance of survival. But there was one thing they absolutely needed: me. Me, and my fellow nurses. Human beings providing human care to other human beings, in the ways that only humans can do. The core function of nursing: using our very humanity, our very existence, (dare I say, our very Dasein), to support the healing and freedom of our fellow humans. I spent a decade in the NICU. I’ve been out of the NICU for almost another decade. In that time, I’ve worked in a variety of setting and roles. Now I work in “mental health.” In the end, I’m doing the same thing I’ve always done, since my first day as a nurse: using my humanity, with knowledge and compassion, to be of benefit and service to those of my fellow humans who need my care. This is why, I say, in no uncertain terms: I am not STEM. I am not a Scientist, although science informs my practice. I am NOT a “technician,” nor a Technologist. I use technology as needed. I used High Frequency Jet Ventilators to help my tiny charges breathe. Now I use teleconferencing software to bring psychiatric care to rural, disadvantaged patients in another state. They are all just tools, equipment. I am not an Engineer. I am not a Mathematician (although I will never forget the pride in correctly calculating a complicated drip rate by hand). I am a NURSE. My fellow nurses and I are the ones you turn to when the technology fails, when the technology injures, when the technology just isn’t enough. Don’t allow technophilia to blind you to the unique role we fill. Being a nurse is enough for me. Is it enough for you?

Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) : Meet the Expert: Marie Grosh, DNP, LNHA “Some people might associate ‘geriatrics’ primarily with nursing home care. This is a common misconception, but in reality, it encompasses much more. I can and do manage intense and complex care in skilled nursing facilities; however, in my practice, I take care of all adults, starting from teenage years and continuing through senior years.” Marie D.
