The United States Department of Defense is set to issue guidance on the use of open radio access networks (ORAN) to support 5G initiatives. ORAN allows for components from multiple vendors to operate together as a single network, providing the Department of Defense (DoD) with more flexibility and the ability to scale quickly. This is in contrast to private networks that offer more control but are not always the best solution, especially in remote locations. The DoD is exploring ORAN as it aims to ensure connectivity wherever the need arises, such as in the Taiwan Strait where current threats seem to colocate. Private networks may be necessary in some cases, but the preference is for open architectures that can leverage existing infrastructure. The guidance from the Pentagon is part of a broader push to accelerate 5G adoption and FutureG initiatives across the military. By supporting ORAN, the DoD aims to avoid vendor lock-in and enable faster innovation, which aligns with the need for feature velocity and the ability to adapt quickly to evolving threats. #5G #ORAN #OpenNetworks #TechInnovation #Military #DoD #FutureG

We’re pleased to announce that Hughes has received a Department of Defense contract to develop an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) prototype at Fort Bliss, Texas. The O-RAN project at Fort Bliss is a great chance for the DoD to explore the enhanced command and control capabilities that near-real time control of the RAN offers to the Department of Defense. . The O-RAN project there at Fort Bliss has a scope which was designed to meet key strategic milestones that support FY 2024 National Defense Authorization Act requirements, as well as DoD initiatives intended to diversify the supply chain. It will also improve Army processes for enabling MNO access to various military installations. And this program will serve as a test ground for developing new O-RAN RIC tactical applications, developing footprints for other installations, and for establishing a training site for both civilian and military technical staff. The Army will also evaluate policies and network architecture standards that leverage commercially interchangeable and vendor-agnostic solutions to enhance the Army Unified Network program. #O-RAN #OpenRAN #5G #SecureNetworks #Resiliency #MNO #DefenseAuthorizationAct
