??? Election Day in the US ??? Perfect timing for our third year BA (Hons) Media and Communications students to critically analyse the election online. In our #Media module today we’re analysing campaign tactics and strategies used across social media as well as news organisations and their coverage of the election. Students are populating a Padlet with some initial findings: - Kamala’s engagement with celebrities and popular culture e.g Beyoncé, Taylor Swift “brat summer”, SNL appearance. Targeting wider, and younger demographic. Represented as “cool” and contemporary. - Trumps use of fear-mongering “If Kamala wins, you are 3 days away from the start of a 1929-style economic depression” - Trump and Republican strategies similar/same as previous campaigns: “rage baiting”, provocative statements, blame shifting, evading questions. - Reels - very popular tool of spreadable media on both sides to endorse or undermine - further spread by celebrity endorsement. - Kamala appearing on podcasts (e.g Call Her Daddy) to reach feminist/gen z voters. - Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, Joe Rogen, Russell Brand, Dr Phil, Kanye West and Catelyn Jenner all in favour of Trump. Students identify link between these celebrities and economic interests/privilege. -#fightforamerica rhetoric in Trump campaigns. Whole country called to action to vote for Trump to “save” America or “make it great again”. This was how i became the President of my college??... Reflecting on my journey, I've learned that success in elections goes beyond mere participation in college activities and getting good grades. ?? As a marketing enthusiast, I understood the importance of strategic self-promotion, especially during campaign season. ?? Just a week before the elections, I launched an intensive outreach effort. I reached out personally to every eligible voter, including those I knew wouldn't vote for me, urging them to support my candidacy. Despite the odds, this targeted approach paid off remarkably—I secured 22 out of 28 votes, clinching the presidency. ???? This experience mirrors the dynamics of real-world politics. While diligent service over the years is crucial, effective campaigning during election time is equally vital. The notion that intense campaigning just before elections indicates a lack of prior action overlooks the efforts put into building a record worth showcasing. ???? Obviously, when voting, don't solely rely on campaign narratives. Conduct a thorough assessment of the candidates and their contributions. Making informed decisions ensures that the right individuals lead our institutions and communities forward. ???? And If you want all the information about your leaders in one place, then Roarink got you covered.

What have I learned over the last 8 weeks? ?? I set out to increase participation in our democracy, but we have the lowest voter turnout currently compared to any of the past 3 elections. Dismal failure. ?? I have talked to thousands of people. Smiled at them, been open with them. Realised my comfort zone is different at this age - I am confident, happy to chat to anyone, this strength will stay with me, regardless of the outcome. ?? My skin has thickened. I needed it! Criticisms have rolled off my back in a way I wish I had been capable of for the preceding 41 years! I am so happy to have experienced my inner critic diminish as the external ones have presented themselves. ?? I have become proud of my values. At first I was worried to be labelled so I watered myself down. But I have become confident to say I’m for environment and for people, but I’m also for on-time on-budget and reducing wasteful spending. Regardless of if I’m elected, I think people with strong values in this space should absolutely run for council! ?? Local government elections need an overhaul. This is not a good way to elect people to govern an organisation of this size. We should have been required to pass a comprehensive test to be eligible to stand. We should be required to make our positions clear, our values transparent. The candidate list is rife with conspiracy theorists and climate change deniers. And we need online voting. It has poured with rain these past weeks and people do not want to leave their houses. We are in an age of online trading, we need to have online voting - this system as it is, is not very democratic. ?? My ward has the best group of candidates. There are ten hard working and unique individuals fighting it out, running great campaigns. We have run an event together (speed dating) and had multiple supportive group email threads running. We have all agreed to have a catch up post, and there is talk of us being a focus group for the successful candidate. We have a lot to offer and it makes me feel really proud we have bridged our respective gaps to share our common ground of campaigning. A great experience. ?? Campaigning has been more than full-time “work” but family responsibilities have still been able to be prioritised throughout. There have been school shows, parent-teacher events and of course school holidays currently. I’ve been able to balance both, with the support of my amazing partner and our family. I could not do this alone. This week one daughter had surgery and today both daughters have woken up with chicken pox. I am proud to be a working mum, and if I’m elected I’m so confident I can do a great job of being both a public servant and a mother and partner. Thank you to all of my network for your support. It has been an incredible experience and I’m excited to see what tomorrow will bring. Either way things will change for me, they already have and I have done my absolute best. Happy weekend everyone x

Excited to share my research paper for SOCL 203, titled "Social Media Influence and Voter Engagement: A Study of PTI's 2024 Election Campaign." In this study, I explored the relationship between exposure to hashtags and memes on social media platforms (Twitter & Instagram) and their impact on voter engagement and participation during PTI’s 2024 election campaign. Using a quantitative survey approach with 35 participants from a social statistics class, I discovered some interesting insights: ?? Key Findings: A significant positive correlation between exposure to political content (hashtags, memes) and voter engagement. The more people interacted with these, the more likely they were to participate in voting. There was no significant difference in voter participation between male and female participants. This research highlights the growing influence of social media in mobilizing political engagement, especially among younger voters as the participants were aged between 19-22. It has crucial implications for political campaigns and social media strategies aimed at increasing voter turnout. ?? Implications: Political campaigns can leverage social media strategies to mobilize youth voters. Educational institutions could benefit from adding social media literacy courses to help students critically engage with political content online. This research adds to the growing conversation on how digital platforms influence politics and voter behavior, especially among younger audiences. Check it out for more insights!

On a day when #elections in America will determine the next four years of global political and economic leadership (as well as how the US spends money on #InternationalDevelopment), and we are deep into tracking turnout and results on cable news and political feeds… Yep, it’s time to go back to Teen Vogue, my friends! After polls close today, much of the upcoming 2-3 years will be on a specific path – so it is time to look beyond to the next generation of voters. For those of us in our middle ages, (and the rather elderly political leaders in the US Congress), perhaps we do not understand either how the new voters in 2028 and 2032 will be informed, or how this new generation’s political outlook is being formed now. And I am absolutely convinced that when I and my cohort were 12 or 13, we were absolutely not at the same level as the folks who will be voting for the first time in the next US presidential election. If you do not believe that #MediaLiteracy should be mandated for school curricula, and that our current past-retirement-age politicians have failed in efforts to regulate #SocialMedia content moderation through Section 230 reforms, take a look at what is facing the next wave of voters from this outstanding piece by Lilyanna D'Amato. How do younger teenagers see the world? Check this out: Maya, age 13: “I feel like everybody's really scared about what either [of the presidential candidates] would do about gun control…. I feel like…our safety [is] being ignored.” Phoebe, age 12: The recent presidential debate “didn’t seem like it was fitting the needs of our generation as much as the needs of generations before us…” Chris, age 13: “Lately, a lot of people in my school have been kind of negative about [politics], mostly because they think that if we continue the way we're handling situations now that we'll never be able to fully run this country properly.” I truly hope that we do not fail the next generation of political leaders. We are well behind the curve. #journalism #journalismmatters #disinformation #fakenews #mediadevelopment
