We got the Spotlight Cover in the Journal of Neurophysiology! More than a decade and 3 labs ago, we asked: What is the swimming neuron doing in the crawling mollusk? These questions are important given this one key principle in neuroethology. Any new behavior, in particular, its underlying circuit, must emerge from a pre-existing circuit. It took so long to publish this research for the simplest reason—beyond doing a Ph.D. in cortex development. Every hypothesis we had throughout was wrong. "Many people wonder if it is ever going to be possible to have a complete understanding of the brain, this enormously complex and powerful organ. Can the brain really understand itself? Many students may assume that there are no limits to the depth we can probe into the mysteries of the brain, but still they hesitate to say that all the richness of human behaviour and culture can be explained in biological and physical terms. Others may have less respect for the wonders of the brain and believe that computers will do better by the year 2000. In our quest to discover how the brain works we can easily find social and medical benefits in new knowledge, but can we see any dangers in the future? Most of us are probably not concerned at present, but I was taken aback the other day as I was asked 'When will you be able to control human behaviour?' My immediate answer was 'Never, I hope'." - neurobiologist Torsten Wiesel in his 1981 banquet speech Today Wiesel turns 100 - join us in congratulating him! Wiesel was awarded the medicine prize for research on how our vision works. Together with his co-laureate David Hubel, Wiesel clarified how light is converted into signals that are sent to the brain and there converted into visual impressions. In the cerebral, cortex signals are analysed in sequence by cells with the specific tasks of interpreting contrasts, patterns, and movements. The term "emotional cells" is not recognized in biology or medicine in a literal sense. However, it may refer to cells of the nervous system, particularly neurons, which play a crucial role in regulating and processing emotions. These cells form complex networks in the brain and nervous system and are involved in the perception, interpretation, and response to emotional stimuli. For example, brain areas such as the amygdala and hypothalamus are associated with generating and regulating emotions such as fear, happiness, and sadness. Although they are not specifically called "emotional cells," these neuronal cells are fundamental to our emotional experience and the functioning of the central nervous system in relation to emotions.

If nervous systems are distribution networks that transport signals, then their?functional units are the neurons: the smallest entity that produces signals, carries them rapidly over long distances, and passes them along to other units. Nervous systems are however not made entirely of neurons: they include?vascular and glial cells,?and couldn't possibly function without these non-neuronal cells.
