- 3 to the launch of my new project!
Ephemeral #fashion, volatile markets and Milano Design Week
This week all the key fashion and luxury brands are involved in presentations and events at the Milano Design Week, a whirlwind of chaos and supposed creativity once romantically called "Salone del Mobile" a furniture and design fair where all the artisans and key companies were selling to retailers their catalogues of products.
In these days the MDW has become a sort of a circus or Dante's circle where influencers, PR and socialites fly from a place to another with a stunned glaze on set up and food while alternating Instagram and TikTok posts of posh places to sensitive pictures of children dying somewhere else in the world.
From business fair the Design Week turned into the realm of ephemeral ideas and products that will never see the life in most of the cases and that will be sold at discounted prices as "samples".
While the buzz and the hype is great for an industry, the takeover of the Design Week by fashion brands eager to conquer even more visibility and market share is, once again, suffocating real artisans and the specific know-how.
Having French brands launching Giò Ponti products that have anything to do with their own DNA or Italian brands presenting their own furniture line means a lot of glam and a sort of cannibalization of a design industry that had nothing to do with fashion and very likely would have never considered a partnership in this sense.
The Italian artisanal savoir faire is being smothered by brands willing to just put their stamp on an event held today that will be immediately forgotten tomorrow.
Industrial design is a precious Italian gem, with such an incredible know how and vision that it deserves to have its proper space, not polluted by the eagerness of fashion that already has its precious moments.
Fashion brands tend to promote way to much the hype and the to quickly pass on something else, the flaw of the industry is the lack of roots and the preference for superficial activities that do not leave any trace behind.
This ephemeral approach is constantly feeding the volatility of the markets, and the fast changing taste in the customers. It cannot certainly help a fashion business to develop robustly.
It is a pity that in such a chaotic and overwhelming week we lose sight of the little jewels that made Italy great in the past century.
It would be a good idea to leave interior design brands express themselves without the need of putting a fashion label on them.
Don't we all desire pureness of the message and creative ideas and great emotions that are not directly related to a fashion bag?
Do not we dream of a house interior that has not logo in it and a touch of a real artisan instead?
What do you think?
Stay tuned!
My new project will launch on April 19th.
