Important overview of how the demonization of Israel is leading to increased anti-Semitism.
“Funders are duty-bound to stand by their values. Antisemitism is on the rise, with 73 percent of Jewish students saying they’ve faced or witnessed antisemitism while a third hide signs of their Jewish identity. Without intervention from grant makers such as The Russell Berrie Foundation and philanthropists like Robert Kraft and Marc Rowan, campus antisemitism would continue, unchecked. It’s unacceptable for nonprofits to pretend that demonization of Israel plays no role in antisemitism. Funders are right to call that out.” Jewish Funders Network President and CEO Andrés Spokoiny ??? makes compelling arguments in his The Chronicle of Philanthropy letter in response to the 6/18 article, “Nonprofits Are Taking a Stance on Gaza – and Paying the Price.”

Yesterday, 30 leaders from across the Dallas Jewish community embarked on a unique journey through rainy North Texas: a bus tour to visit five local nonprofit organizations: JCC of Dallas, Hillels of North Texas, Torah Day School of Dallas, Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas, and The Legacy Senior Communities. Our mission was to explore community opportunities, understand challenges, and witness firsthand how collaboration is driving our community forward. Here are my 3 key takeaways: 1) "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" – Just as President Reagan’s 1987 call symbolized the removal of barriers, our community organizations are breaking down silos and fostering partnerships that create meaningful change. From in-depth discussions on endowment sustainability, developing programs that meet community members in their own neighborhoods, to forming coalitions that map senior services, one thing is clear: we can’t afford to guard information or compete for donor recognition if we want to build a successful future together. 2) "The grass is greener where you water it." – Over the past five years, Dallas Jewish institutions have invested over $10 million in security infrastructure. While this investment is crucial for safety, imagine the impact if those funds could have been directed towards mission-driven work! Unfortunately, with rising antisemitism and hate crimes in our own neighborhoods, the need to protect our community remains a significant challenge. Balancing security needs with the drive for positive change in Jewish professional work is a unique communal reality we must face. 3) "The times they are a-changin'." – The Dallas Jewish community today looks vastly different from 20 years ago. It’s expanding northward beyond traditional neighborhood boundaries, is significantly younger compared to other regions (thanks to Texas job opportunities), and is more diverse, with increasing numbers of interfaith households, a growing Israeli population, and more Orthodox representation. How will Jewish life need to adapt to support these changes while continuing to meet current needs? The challenges are numerous and complex, and time is not on our side. Yet, when I reflect on the partnership, trust, and shared commitment between my organization and those we work alongside, I am reassured. We have an incredible team of professional and volunteer leaders dedicated to successfully guiding us through this journey. A huge thank you to Igor Alterman, Rabbi Mordechai Harris and the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas for organizing an outstanding "Mini-Mission" yesterday! And of course, our appreciation to the speakers & hosts for inviting us in from the weather, and to the 30 individuals who set aside time from family and personal commitments to experience this mission together.

Six months after Israel's deadliest day and amid the ongoing conflict, Lisa Eisen of Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies and I reflect on the eventual shift from emergency response to rebuilding, and how funders can and should contribute, in an eJewishPhilanthropy op-ed. Many thanks to Lisa for her partnership, and to eJewishPhilanthropy for the opportunity to share our thoughts on three key ways that funders can aid in Israel's recovery: investing in women's leadership, engaging affected communities, and embracing flexibility to respond to emerging needs. https://lnkd.in/gtmjT8Eb

As someone who worked for years in philanthropy both as a funder then a funder organizer, I wanted to share this timely new essay in Community Centric Fundraising's newsletter: The Content Hub, “How to talk about Palestine in the workplace: A step-by-step guide to starting” by Hanna Stubblefield-Tave. She shares why speaking up about Palestine is important to do and how you can be in solidarity, talk about Palestine in the workplace, and mobilize resources to support Palestinians, step by step.

We need new innovative solutions to fight the growing influence of far-right movements in Europe. I spoke with Shafi Musaddique at Alliance magazine about how prejudice in politics hurts our economies and politics and why public bodies and policymakers need to take more risks. Read the article below. #HumanRights #EuropeanPolitics #RomaforEurope
A philanthropic fightback is needed as Europe’s far right ‘occupies more space and power’ than ever before, warns Open Society Foundations newly established Roma Foundation. Speaking to Alliance magazine, head of the Roma Foundation Zeljko Jovanovic warned that the far right’s articulation of their own arguments has endangered the confidence and self-esteem of the Roma community.? ?
