Archbishop of Canterbury comment following ICJ’s Advisory Opinion: “At a time when the world is marked by increasing violations of international law – and commitment to a rules-based system is in question – it is imperative that governments around the world reaffirm their unwavering commitment to all decisions by the International Court of Justice, irrespective of the situation. International law protects our shared humanity, and safeguards human dignity and flourishing. To resist a world where actions such as torture, hostage-taking and indiscriminate violence become the norm, we must apply the law without fear or favour in all circumstances. But for too long it has been applied and upheld in a selective manner that threatens our common peace and security. Now is the time to reverse that deeply damaging tr
Another crazy, extreme-left antisemite? This one says "the regime imposed by successive Israeli governments in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is one of systemic discrimination. Through annexing Palestinian land for illegal settlements, depriving Palestinians access to their own natural resources, and imposing a system of military rule that denies them safety and justice, the State of Israel has been denying the Palestinian people dignity, freedom and hope.?... It is clear that ending the occupation is a legal and moral necessity." Oh wait - it's the Archbishop of Canterbury...

The decision to sanction Theodor Meron, a Holocaust survivor and an eminent legal scholar with significant contributions to international law and human rights, is a stark reminder of the uncomfortable but necessary accountability required in international law. His work is based on his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and human rights. The sanction sends a chilling message: that the pursuit of justice, no matter how well-founded, may be punished if it challenges powerful interests. Such actions threaten to erode the integrity of international legal systems and silence those who dare to hold power to account. It is crucial to distinguish between antisemitism and genuine, evidence-based critique of policies or actions that violate international norms. Failing to do so harms not only individuals like Meron but also the cause of justice and the fight against real antisemitism.

"A good man sanctioned" In the name of fighting antisemitism, the Congress just voted to sanction (among other jurists) Theodor Meron, a literal Holocaust survivor, former “Isreli” Ambassador to Canada and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Meron was one of the experts Karim Khan consulted before formally seeking the warrants, and - on a standard of clear and convincing evidence - called for Khan to seek warrants for Netanyahu's and Gallant's arrest, for the use of starvation as a weapon of war and murder. He immigrated to the United States in 1978. Prior to his immigration to the United States, he was legal adviser of the "Isreli" Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which role he authored a secret memorandum in 1967 (since made public) in which he concluded that creating new settlements in the Occupied Territories would be a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

This is quite an ignominious distinction… There has been a lot of ink spilled over the last several days looking into the divisions within the War Cabinet and how that is playing out in the broader public (both in Israel and the wider world). That an Israeli PM looks poised to stand in the same dock as the country’s nemesis, just behind the Russian president in the queue, can’t just be chalked up solely to antisemitism or anti-Israel sentiment. There has been too much reporting on the political failures that have been missing as the IDF stands at the brink of a final push to eradicate Hamas from power. No plan has been floated on how Gaza will be governed after Hamas. How can that be good for Israel or Palestinians? I saw an insightful interview on Sunday with Gen. David Petraeus on how the U.S. found success in routing Al Queda from Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004. It worked there, but that requires demonstrating that life after Hamas will be different — better and safer — for Gazans (and Israelis), the former of whom must be a part of a political solution. The alternatives are either occupation or anarchy. The latter is what propelled Hamas to be elected back in 2006. Yes, release the hostages, but then what? The hostages will be found (hopefully more alive than not), but what happens after that? That we still don't know what that answer looks like is, I believe, the ultimate indictment of Bibi’s vacuous leadership. We should expect more from the PM of Israel!

I think the talk about two states without actions against Israeli violations of international law is nothing but giving Israel the time to finish the job of killing the two-state solution" Mustafa Barghouti is a respected Palestinian politician and activist who serves as the Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative (PNI). Key figures, including Edward Said and Haidar Abdel-Shafi founded the initiative. In a clip from the video [Palestinakomiteen I Norge: Dr Mustafa Barghouti on the future of Palestine], Dr Mustafa Barghouti highlights four essential actions for a genuine two-state solution: 1. Ending the occupation 2. Ceasing settlement activities 3. Removing settlers 4. Recognizing the Palestinians' right to self-determination and statehood Dr. Barghouti criticises the international community, especially the United States and Israel, for not genuinely pursuing a two-state solution. He argues that these parties use negotiations as a cover while continuing to undermine Palestinian sovereignty through ongoing settlement activities. Dr. Barghouti emphasises that discussions about a two-state solution are ineffective and misleading without taking these actions. #MustafaBarghouti #TwoStateSolution #InternationalLaw #HumanRights #history #politics #government #peace

Besides genocide of women, children and young and elderly, Israel is now killing Muslim intellectuals in Palestine. Muslim Ummah is asleep. Had Israel killed Americans, US would have entered into Israel to take revenge. Muslim Ummah and nuclear power Pakistan need to organise Muslim Ummah Alliance Treaty (MUAT)on lines of NATO and enter Israel with Army, Airforce and Navy equipred with most modern weaponry to END UP Israel and to erase it from world map for ever. This is exact time of Real Holy War against Zionism (???? ?? ???? ???)? This is time to avenge.

Professor of Law, Mamdouh Abu Al Husna, has just been assassinated along with his father and two of his sons in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their home in Jabalia. There is consensus within European legal communities that Israel is committing genocide. A number of lawyers in the UK and Netherlands are making an effort to hold their governments accountable for their complicity in this genocide, but legal professionals in other countries remain very quiet. At this point, we must all ask ourselves what the legal industry is for: is it to uphold justice or is it to protect systems that deny justice? In the end, it is legal professionals who determine the nature of our legal industries. Unfortunately, the majority of these professionals are too concerned with protecting themselves, protecting their business interests, and thus upholding deeply discriminatory systems. So it was during the heights of Western Imperialism, so it was in 1930s Germany, so it was when Britain invaded Iraq under false pretences, and so it is today. Rest in peace, Prof. Mamdouh Abu Al-Husna. May justice eventually be served. #accesstojustice #justice #legaltech #law #genocide

Why you must defend Israel ?? The world stands at a critical juncture. Defending Israel isn’t just about supporting a nation; it’s about upholding international law and global stability. Israel is recognized by the United Nations and is a legitimate sovereign state. By standing with Israel, we protect the integrity of international relations and ensure that the rules-based order is respected. Ignoring the plight of Israel means compromising on the very principles that hold our world together. This is not just a matter of policy, but of moral obligation. If we allow Israel’s sovereignty to be questioned, we set a dangerous precedent for all nations. This isn’t just about Israel; it’s about maintaining a world where laws are respected and nations are secure. Act now, stand firm, and defend Israel to preserve peace and uphold justice. Your voice matters in this pivotal moment. Don’t let the flames of instability ignite. Support Israel and safeguard our collective future. Stand for justice, stand for peace, stand for Israel! #Israel #Palestine #InternationalLaw #GlobalStability #Sovereignty #UnitedNations #WorldPeace #Justice #StandWithIsrael #UpholdPeace #ProtectNations #RuleOfLaw #GlobalJustice #MoralObligation #PeaceForAll #SecureWorld #SupportIsrael #GlobalOrder #InternationalRelations #LawAndOrder #NationSecurity #WorldUnity #LegalIntegrity #StandFirm #VoiceForPeace #DefendDemocracy #GlobalSafety #RespectSovereignty #PeaceAdvocacy #UpholdRights

Exactly 125 years after the First Hague Peace Conference and 111 years after its festive opening, the Peace Palace is still very much alive. Every day, the institutions in the Palace work on the peaceful settlement of conflicts and on "Peace through Law". The Carnegie Foundation ensures that the monumental building is suitable for all users, prepares it for the future and supports all the organisations in the Palace with various services. In addition, the foundation promotes and supports work in the field of international law through public activities. An impression of our activities can now be found in our 2023 annual report: https://lnkd.in/eg6hrsXg #PeacePalace #PeaceBuilding #InternationalLaw #TheHague #AnnualReport

With the end of the intensive phase of the Israel-Gaza war, the legal obligations of the parties involved change. Some of Israel's responsibilities are now relinquished, other obligations arise. In a blog for OpinioJuris, I try to explain.
