Mind-blowing connection between Lincoln & Kennedy. Despite becoming US presidents 100 years apart, their lives are filled with uncanny similarities. So, here is a small dive into the rabbit hole. Yesterday I was reading a book where I came across the history of Abraham Lincoln and John. F. Kennedy. And, I couldn’t resist sharing this.? ? ? Abraham Lincoln became US president in 1860 whereas John F. Kennedy reached the position in 1960.? ? Lincoln and Kennedy served as a house of representatives elected in 1846/1946 before becoming vice president in 1856/1956 and then became president. Talk about similarity?? ? Here comes the crazy part, both were shot dead on Friday.? ? Both were shot in the head. ? Adding a layer to this weirdness, “Booth’’ who critically shot Abraham in the theatre hid in a warehouse. And, “Oswald’’ who killed Kennedy shot him from a warehouse and hid in a theatre.? ? This is not it, adding a final twist both the assassins, (Booth and Oswald) were killed before facing trials.? As a mixed race Canadian, Martin Luther King Jr. Day has always been interesting to me. It's not officially observed north of the border, although you'll see lots of people and companies posting about it online. The world changing impact of leaders like Dr. King is undeniable and must be celebrated. Dr. King deserves to be celebrated. With how powerful MLK and the Civil Rights movement was, it's easy to forget that African-American History is not a monolith for Black History in North America. I am always surprised when corporate leadership here in Canada will quickly celebrate the life of MLK and other Black titans of American history, yet will know surprisingly little about the Black Canadians either historically, or in terms of current events. As if African-American progress checks all the boxes for progress for Black folks in Canada. And as if all of the issues of inequality were fixed back in the 60s following the March on Washington. With that, I just have a small ask for Corporate Canada for today and as we approach Black History Month. Please continue to celebrate the titans of history. Celebrate Martin, Malcolm, Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, and many, many more. But don't forget to celebrate Sam Langford, Lincoln Alexander, Viola Desmond, Violet King, Rosemary Brown, Anne Clare Cools, Mary Ann Shadd, Portia White, and many, many more. Working a lot with US clients, I have been sympathising with them about the turn of the year. Because 2024 is an election year, and the vitriol and division are already beginning ahead of the vote in November. I sympathise with them because it looks like they have the same choice as last time: Biden or Trump. It was an uninspiring choice last time and it looks even worse this time. It's my naive hope that a shining hero is going to come over the horizon soon and offer something better. Someone like a Kennedy figure who looks and sounds like a leader (and no, not the actual Kennedy who is going to run this year). When John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected in 1960, he became a symbol of the decade of change that the 60s would become. His speeches were optimistic and aspirational, and if Martin Luther King didn't exist, it would probably be one of his speeches that would've won the title of speech of the 20th Century. You might not agree with Kennedy's policies, or his transgressions in his personal life, but you've got to admit the man had style. JFK had a trademark delivery and clever wordplay that set him apart from not just other US Presidents, but other speakers in history. The speech where this is usually remembered most is his inauguration speech in 1961. You can hear his Massachusetts accent in your head as you read the line: "Ask not what your country can do for you...". But the speech is more than just that line. What makes it such a memorable and admired speech? I have broken down the speech in an analysis video, outlining the different factors that make this such an engaging speech. I also gave myself the challenging task of trying to offer some suggestions that would've made the speech even better. I'm pleased with the few I managed to come up with! Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, has its origins in the aftermath of the American Civil War. This was a period marked by deep, lingering wounds and profound loss across the nation. Yet, even as the conflict ended, a tradition of remembrance and reverence began to emerge. Interestingly, the first organized recognition of fallen U.S. soldiers took place on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina. This solemn event was organized by Black Americans, who were resilient in their pursuit of justice and equality in the face of immense pain. This act of honoring the fallen speaks to the courage and honor that is ingrained in the fabric of Black history in America. As we observe Memorial Day today, let us take the time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and commit ourselves to building a better tomorrow. We must let the lessons of history guide us, while drawing strength from the spirit of unity and resilience that defines us as a nation. #MemorialDay2024

As we commemorate Black History Month, I'm reminded of the profound impact and the enduring legacy of two monumental figures in American history, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. and Benjamin O. Davis Jr., whose stories are brilliantly captured in Doug Melville's "Invisible Generals." My wife, Isabella Pina, and I, who served in the Army for a combined 46 years, feel a deep connection to their journey of resilience, leadership, and groundbreaking achievements. "Invisible Generals" is more than just a book; it's a powerful narrative that brings to light the invisible yet indomitable spirit of these two men who faced unimaginable challenges and persevered against all odds. Their lives exemplify the essence of true leadership and the relentless pursuit of equality within the military ranks and beyond. We observe Black History Month each year in February to honor, celebrate, and educate on the contributions Black Americans have made to our country’s history and culture.?As part of Black History Month, we’re highlighting Katrina Willins, a NIWC Pacific risk management framework specialist based out of the Naval Support Annex in Philadelphia. When asked what the observance month means to her, she spoke about exposure. “Black History Month is a great time to learn about the history and legacy of contributions that have been made by African Americans. When there are programs and events that highlight different races and cultures, I believe we should participate when we can. In the academic world, some of the best ways to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream include: 1) Avoid limiting invitations to black scholars solely to Black History Month events. 2) Extend invitations to black scholars to address a variety of topics beyond race. 3) Encourage black students to pursue PhDs in a wide range of fields, not those related to race.
