Had a great time talking with the youth apart of the Gun Violence Prevention workshops with Hoosiers Concerned about Gun Violence. We talked about why gun violence is so prevalent amongst youth, what we felt were the root causes of it, and ways to combat it. Many youth in the room felt that protection was a major determining factor as to why so many youth carry guns. This led to a conversation about safety and what it would take in order for us to feel safe in our communities. Below are some of the things we came up with ??. Looking forward to facilitating more discussions with youth where we are able to get clear about what a safe community looks and feels like, as well as tangible action steps to achieving it. Transcription: ? Low conflicts ? Conflict Resolution ? People in authority who reflect the community ? No guns ? Clean community (no potholes, clean air, no trash/pollution) ? Healthy masculinity ? Appreciation of life ? Mental health services ? Addressing homelessness Action Steps: ? Community clean ups ? Relatability in violence reduction programs ? Meet people where they are ? People with lived experiences - relatable

Title: Reigniting the Vanguard Approach for National Youth Violence Prevention In 2014, we embarked on a bold and unconventional journey, pioneering a vanguard approach to address youth violence by directly engaging with those at the heart of the issue. We became known as the only pro-"gang" organization, a term we've since evolved from, preferring to refer to our members as tribal members to foster a sense of belonging and respect. This shift in terminology is part of our commitment to harm reduction and the use of language that empowers rather than alienates. Our initial efforts were groundbreaking, scary for some, yet undeniably effective. Through the creation of peace treaties and the establishment of a bi-weekly roundtable, we brought together three representatives from each tribe, providing a platform for dialogue, problem-solving, and mutual understanding. This was not just about creating temporary solutions but empowering our youth to take ownership of their future, to see beyond the immediate and work towards lasting peace and cooperation. Years have passed, and while our board has faced challenges, from members moving away to facing incarceration, the spirit of our mission burns as brightly as ever. The landscape has changed, but the need for a grassroots, youth-led approach to violence prevention is as pressing as ever. It's time to reunite all tribes, to rekindle the flame of our earlier success and adapt it to the challenges of today. Our plan for this year's National Youth Violence Prevention initiative is to relaunch our vanguard approach. We aim to gather the tribes once again, not just to reminisce about past victories but to forge new ones. Our roundtable meetings will resume, serving as a testament to our belief in the power of dialogue and collaboration. These gatherings will be spaces of empowerment, where tribal members can openly discuss issues, share successes, and collaboratively work through challenges. Empowerment remains our guiding principle. By giving our youth the tools and the platform to address their concerns, we are investing in leaders of tomorrow. This is not just about preventing violence; it's about building a community that thrives on understanding, respect, and cooperation. Our journey is not without its hurdles, but our resolve is unwavering. We invite all who share our vision to join us in this renewed effort. Together, we can create a legacy of peace, one that empowers our youth to lead the way forward.
This week is National Youth Violence Prevention Week (#NYVPW). Founded in 2001, NYVPW is a time for youth to lead communities on effective strategies to prevent youth violence. Guns are the leading cause of death among American children and teens. BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and low income children are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. Our children deserve to be safe. We all have a role to play in preventing youth violence. What actions are you planning to take?

Gun violence is a complex and deeply troubling issue that stems from a variety of factors, including social, economic, and psychological influences. From my research and reflection, I have learned that gun violence is not only a result of access to firearms but is also closely linked to systemic issues such as poverty, mental health challenges, and social inequality. Factors like domestic violence, gang activity, and political polarization also play significant roles in shaping the prevalence of gun violence in communities. Understanding these causes highlights that effective prevention must address the root issues, rather than just focusing on restricting access to guns. As individuals, we all have a role to play in prevention by promoting awareness, advocating for sensible policies, and supporting mental health resources in our communities. We can also foster environments of support and open communication, where people are less likely to resort to violence as a means of coping with stress or conflict. While policy changes are essential, personal involvement in raising awareness and being part of community solutions can also have a meaningful impact on reducing gun violence and its tragic consequences. #FYE #ABetterGeneration #WorldRefletion

The presence of firearms in abusive situations can dramatically increase the risk of severe injury or death. From 2001 to 2012, over 6,400 women were murdered in the U.S. by an intimate partner using a gun—more than 600 each year. As advocates for survivors of domestic violence, safety planning is a critical part of our daily work. So we're sharing a toolkit designed to support survivors in their safety and healing while providing essential resources to service providers. Please share this resource widely and join the conversation to help prevent gun violence and domestic violence. Online safety is more important than ever for students! The Safe Center taught students at Malverne High School a valuable lesson in protecting themselves online. They learned the importance of creating safe passwords, managing what they share, and recognizing cyberbullying. As Principal Kesha Bascombe said, "Our goal is for students to explore safely as they come into their own." Let's keep our students safe, both in the classroom and online. ?? As a campus violence researcher, I learned that anger is one of the most common factors that motivates perpetrators of mass shootings. There has been a normalization effect of gun violence in the U.S. that provides identities for people with suicidal tendencies. Mass shootings become the final act for some who want to end their life. We often try to rationalize a shooter’s irrational behavior by concluding that the perpetrator has a particular profile. Most perpetrators are male. Besides that, there is no common face or profile of a mass shooter. One of the greatest measures to prevent these tragedies is to improve our systems of healthy human connections so that potential perpetrators don’t relate so much with past perpetrators.
