London Marathon success! This testimonial comes from 80/20 athlete Dean Murley: "This post is made of three parts - 1: A humblebrag, 2: My advocacy of 80/20, and 3: The question of Zones in races. 1: I ran the London Marathon on Sunday, in a PB of 2:58. I never thought it would be possible - I have gone from 5:32 in 2010 to sub-3:00 and I will shortly be 50 years old. 2: I achieved this using 80/20 Endurance plans over the past few years. By this, I mean Level 2 on TrainingPeaks (which is similar to the plans in Matt’s book Run Like a Pro). 3: I ran the race at the very top of my Zone X pace, right on the border of Zone 3. However, I wasn’t focusing on zones at all and the recommendation is that you don’t in a race. Zones are for training, racing is about achieving and holding the fastest pace possible across the entire distance of the course. So don’t get hung up on zones for racing, and especially not Zone 2 - if you’re not careful you might finish the race with too much left in the tank. Sure, use Zone 2 as a gauge in your first marathon, but your training should be using marathon-paced runs that will prove to you that you can probably race marathons in Zone X." It’s race week for the @lajollahalfmarathon! This will be my 8th year running this beautiful, hilly course. People often ask, why do you run the same race year after year? Well, like a lot of runners, I'm a bit of a creature of habit. There's a few reasons I love running the same race multiple times: ??Familiar Course No surprises about where the hills are, where the turnaround points are, when to start my kick. With no guesswork, I'm able to focus on running a strong race ??Compare Progress Running YOY gives me a good outlook of how I'm improving/sucking at running - I can assess if it's been a good/bad training block, or if age is slowly creeping on a come up! ??Support local Let's face it, running isn't exactly a cheap sport. Race entries can be pricey! Throw in travel, etc. before you know it, pockets like bunny ears! Smaller races & distances are more affordable and can still be high quality events. ??Previous success I’ve done pretty well over the years. Five of them, I’ve ran 1:30 or better. Three times I’ve placed top three for my age group. With some good success over the years at this race, it makes me want to sign up again to see if I can make magic happen one more time! 2024 was a great year. Here is how my goals shook out: Running/Hiking - Goal was 1,000 miles. 919.61 miles completed. Cycling - Goal was 3,000 miles. 4,453.16 miles completed. Races - Goal was 12 races. 12 races completed. Reading - Goal was 40 books. Finished at 75 books read. RUN MELBOURNE ?? 2024 edition is in the books. A strong showing from the JET athletes who took to the streets of Melbourne ?? We are strong believers in using winter to build better athletes for racing season. As such we don’t call it an ‘off-season’ - which helps frame the mindset for athletes and coaches alike.
