Looking at the Next Phillips sale – (the afternoon session today on 15th May 2024), there are 142 lots in this sale. I have selected 14 works I think are wonderful and they are listed below. I usually drill down further and identify 5 lots I really wanted to acquire. If I had a catalogue I would mark up these lots on my catalogue, I note my starting bid price and my maximum bid price too. I work out all the potential costs, so I know exactly what I am in for. ? I do my research ahead of any sale and look at typical pricing of the artists works and try to gauge how the artists are performing in the market, by researching the artists’ auction history and familiarising myself with the galleries that represent the artists and the typical sales prices for those types of works. I drill down into the specific artworks being offered and read the catalogue notes, see the works in person and ask for condition reports. For works outside of my specialist knowledge area I speak with specialists/experts and try to get their views on the quality of the works I am interested in. A lot of research is normally done ahead of any buying decision and participation in an auction, including due diligence on the specific piece.
