Just back from Climate Week: 1. Thank you SJF Ventures and Dave Kirkpatrick for hosting a discussion that was more productive than most. Insurance companies need better data to help with ROI arguments for resilience and sustainability investment – thanks Amy Barnes of Marsh McLennan for pointing that out. Companies need to make it more clear who owns strategic resilience and sustainability, not just reporting for it. And we have a budding set of climate entrepreneurs including Matt Stein of Salient Predictions and Mishal Thadani of Rhizome Data. 2. Fantastic to meet Kayla Ver Helst from Bank of North Dakota and STAND, focused on innovation to improve environmental stewardship in the state. We need to do more to welcome folks like Kayla and others from states doing their part to improve our environmental outlook. 3. Congratulations to Generate Capital on their 10th anniversary of investing in sustainability. 4. Did you know there is a Climate Museum NY in the works? https://lnkd.in/eVQnDvas 5. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has ramped up its effort to connect private capital to companies with proven technology through its Office of Clean Energy Infrastructure. 6. MSCi data shows improving integrity in the carbon credit markets: https://lnkd.in/eC2Ji8kZ 7. Thanks to Macquarie Asset Management for hosting us in their new offices and for their ongoing support. Thinking of friends dealing with devastating weather and climate events especially over the past few days. Good to see my colleagues in NY last week: Trent Yang, Sarene Marshall, Alla Jezmir, Jennifer Von Bismarck.

Climate change is having an increasing and lasting impact on our environment and society. This is the context within which cultural heritage - tangible and intangible - is threatened by well-known, new and more extreme risks. Yet, while cultural heritage is acknowledged as being more urgently challenged by climate change, it is acknowledged that cultural heritage has also the potential to play an active role in the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future. It is vital that research further explores how to make cultural heritage a readily available resource for climate mitigation, adaptation and for sustainable development. Read more about 16 international projects currently funded in the joint call by JPI Climate, JPI Cultural Heritage, and the Belmont Forum. It is truly embarassing to see Europe's richest country, Germany, standing idle aside, once again, so with no share in co-funding, there is not a single research project with participation from German researchers in this call. A painful defeat for me personally as Germany′s delegate to JPI Cultural Heritage. I did not manage last year to convince Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien and Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung how crucial a regular participation in such calls will be for the future of our cultural heritage in climate crisis. But I congratulate all the researchers and the funders on these excellent projects and wish them all success! Enjoy the read:

When doing research for my book about the impact artists can have on interdisciplinary collaboration, I came across some terrific content which I’ve decided to share in a series of posts. Today I want to share this: "The effects of climate change are well known, but policy solutions are missing one potential solution to address the issue: creative arts." https://lnkd.in/g4Xvp4PF

"Tipping points"—an often-used term in climate science—could define our planet's future, yet its definition remains vague and inconsistent. Can we afford such ambiguity in the face of urgent climate action? Or is a clear, unified definition necessary? ?? Join Vasilis Dakos (University of Montpellier) and Sebastian Bathiany (Technical University of Munich) from the #ClimTip project, alongside Bob Kopp (Rutgers University) and moderator Elisabeth Krueger (University of Amsterdam), as they dive into the concept of climate tipping points, its use and role in both scientific research and public understanding. During the session, the panel will explore: ? Whether we need a precise definition of tipping points, or if the term's flexibility is an asset. ? How tipping points apply across various disciplines and how they influence societal decisions. ? Their role in public communication and the impact on decision-making. ?? 11 October, 14:00-15:30 CEST ?? Jos Delbeke, what a superb timing with which your first chapter '???????? ???? ?????????? ???? ???? ??????????????????????????? ???????????????????' pops up on the screen as we wait for the emerging new European Commission, possibly with Teresa Ribera as climate boss! Looking back at the last 25 years: at the beginning people believing that you and some of us were "air conditioning' (=climate change) experts. By now we have a lot to carry forward regarding what worked and what did not work. As institutional memory of institutions - from corporates to governments, including the European Commission - is so weak, this book of the DG Clima & other DG climate action 'doers and thinkers' is of enormous value by showing the 'step-by-step approach that has been used to develop these policies, and the ways in which they have been tested and further improved in the light of experience'. Thank you for putting your thoughts down: Christian Holzleitner, Damien Meadows, Phil Wynn Owen CB, Alex Paquot, Artur Runge-Metzger , Yvon Slingenberg , Tom Van Ierland (Artur, Yvon & Tom: time to join LinkedIn!!) Stefaan Vergote, Peter Vis, Peter Wehrheim &, Jacob Werksman. The updated version is available below and through open access at Taylor & Francis Group ( link below in comments).

https://lnkd.in/dcDF7g7X Ever since I read a few articles (peer reviewed) on climate communication through art, I have been really interested in the power it has to affect individuals and our society. It really can contribute to realisation,?inspiration and a positive change in our behaviour. If given the right space it can also boost positive sustainability trends and put pressure on decision makers. I believe we need more of this, not only at museums, but also in parks and city centres. Places where a lot of people can see it. We need good collaboration between scientists and artists, and we need people to support these communicational efforts. Another example of an art piece, that in my opinion does this well is Thijs Bierstekers work on cigarette buds which you can check out here:?https://lnkd.in/dgzwkaBG. I really believe that if I walked down the street with a cigarette and saw this, I would think twice before throwing it on the ground.

?? Supriya Krishnan has been nominated for this year's Allianz Climate Risk Award. Keep up your work on #resilience #engineering ?? Launched in 2017, the Allianz Climate Risk Award is part of the Allianz's activities to support scientific research that improves understanding of climate change-related risks. ??? Supriya writes: "In regions heavily shielded by engineered flood defenses, the true implications of risk are often overlooked. Our research on proactive urban planning for building resilience against catastrophic floods has made it to the finals of the Allianz Climate Risk Award."
We are thrilled to announce this year's Allianz Climate Risk Award finalists! Once again, we are very proud of all the applications we received, and very excited to share the names of the 10 finalists: Alberto Ardid Segura, Harold Armando Achicanoy Estrella, Iciar Guerrero Calzas, James Carruthers, Joaquin Vicente Ferrer, Jonas Schmitt, Joseph Lockwood, Simona Meiler, Supriya Krishnan and Zélie Stalhandske. This year, our finalists come from a variety of 8 different countries; we congratulate these young scientists and thank them for their collaboration in the award! ???? ?? ?? ?? #research #understandingclimaterisk #listentothescientists #university
