Calendars used around the globe in 2024 Different countries and cultures use various calendar systems. The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used internationally for civil purposes, but some countries also use their own calendars for religious or cultural events. The World Population Review stated that most countries use the #gregorian_calendar. The exception to this is Ethiopia, Nepal, Iran. The Gregorian calendar is often referred to as the New Style calendar. This is a solar dating system that was proclaimed the official dating system by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 as a reformation of the previously adopted Julian calendar. see: https://lnkd.in/evrcBybR Each of these calendars has its own unique characteristics and historical context. A. Solar Calendars: 1. Gregorian Calendar: Used globally for civil purposes. see: https://lnkd.in/eVjph6Ak 2. Julian Calendar: Historical calendar used primarily by Orthodox Christian communities. 3. Thai Solar Calendar: Used in Thailand, similar to the Gregorian calendar but with different epoch and month names. B. Lunisolar Calendars: 1. Jewish Calendar: Used by Jewish communities for religious purposes. 2. Hindu Calendar: Used in Hindu-majority regions for religious and cultural purposes. 3. Chinese Calendar: Used in China and East Asia for traditional purposes, including determining festival dates. C. Lunar Calendars: 1. Islamic Calendar (Hijri): Used primarily in the Islamic world for religious purposes. 2. Buddhist Calendar: Used in some Buddhist communities for religious and cultural events. D. Seasonal Calendars: 1. Mayan Calendar: Used by ancient Mayan civilization in Mesoamerica. 2. Aztecan Calendar: Used by the Aztec civilization in Mesoamerica. 3. Egyptian Calendar: Used by ancient Egyptians, based on the agricultural seasons of the Nile River. 4. Mesopotamian Calendar: Used by ancient Mesopotamian civilizations, also based on agricultural seasons. This Post is related to the subject matter as presented above. These days, we are finishing the collection of the four elements of nature, inspired by the culture and mythology of Zoroastrians from Iran and India. This collection includes the four elements of water, wind, fire, and earth, each of which is associated with one of the Zoroastrian deities. It was very interesting to research how Glasgow's Museums have made headway in returning Benin Bronzes and how such agreements are made inside and outside of the legal context. But there remains some key strategic cultural questions for both museums in the Global North and South to answer, particularly as the relations between these two polities slowly shift.
