The thing about academics thinking “I love this work more than anything” is a) I believe you but b) you don’t know what you don’t know. Leaving academia—any career change—is an act of hope for a better tomorrow, and faith that you can have these feelings about another job. It’s helpful to get more specific about what part of this work you love, what you don’t mind doing, and what you prefer to avoid in future. Because I’m willing to bet that not every minute of every day as a faculty member fills you with joy or deep appreciation for what’s going on. Doing that specifying is going to make it a lot easier to recognize what you want to keep in your career and what you’d be okay with jettisoning. The step after that (in addition to keeping the faith) is exploring in what other roles in what other places do folks experience these things. Because I ASSURE YOU that academia isn’t unique in giving you an opportunity to, for example - Mentor young people - Act as an expert advising policymakers - Write thoughtfully about important social issues - Conduct exacting science experiments - Prepare teaching materials that have an impact on learners - [Fill in your own key thing here] I can hear some of you right now: “Oh but I love everything about this. No other job has this balance of A, B, C.” Hold up. Because, again, you don’t know what you don’t know. And hey, it’s always possible another situation would actually be even better?for you and your family! Something different will be different, but that's true in academia as well. Every department, university, region is its own thing. If you’re feeling disrespected, undervalued, or simply exhausted by the demands of your current job it’s worth the effort to figure out whether you might be better served elsewhere. That doesn’t mean quitting tomorrow! (Unless you want to.) It?does?mean employing your critical thinking, information gathering, and analytical skills to your career instead of just your academic subject matter. Please do that. — ???? I'm Jen! I help professors, postdocs, and other PhDs ready to leave academia land meaningful jobs where they’ll be valued and respected. ?? Today, I had the privilege of joining friends and colleagues at another Masters of Public Health graduation at the University of Chester and am excited to have also earned my own MPH degree from this university! To those of you freshly graduated from a UK university – here are a few pieces of advice I hope will be helpful: A Degree is Just the Start: While your degree is a great accomplishment, it doesn't automatically translate knowledge into experience. Now is the time to actively seek opportunities that build experience. Remember, experience won’t always come with a glamorous package – sometimes it requires sacrifices, like volunteering or internships with minimal pay. But rest assured, it’s a phase, and it will pass. Embrace every learning opportunity that comes your way! Publish Your Dissertation: Your dissertation has already been peer-reviewed by an examiner. Use that momentum to turn it into a manuscript and publish it! Whether or not academia is in your future, employers look for people who can gather, process, and analyze data. Publishing your work not only showcases your skills but also positions you as someone committed to advancing knowledge. And if academia is for you, attending conferences and presenting your work is invaluable for professional growth. Thinking of a PhD? If a PhD. is on your radar, and now is the perfect time to pursue it. When you’re fresh out of a master’s program, it’s often easier to transition back into academia. Plus, applications are open right now, so seize the opportunity! In every endeavour, remember to make the most of the experiences in front of you and don’t settle for less. I wish you all the best on this journey – the field needs driven professionals like you! #MPH #PublicHealth #CareerAdvice #Graduation #PhDTips #ProfessionalGrowth #AcademicPublishing

Hey everyone! Welcome to our page ?? !! Now that many of you have been accepted to great policy schools (Congratulations ??), here are some tips to help you make the most of your time before you start school and hit the ground running from Day 0 ?? : ?? ?Identify a policy domain/role of your interest– Identify policy areas (such as education, tech, health etc) you’re passionate about or the type of work (such as data analysis, advocacy) you're interested in. This will act as a guide as well as a check to ensure that all your actions are aligned or at least related to your area of interest. If you are still exploring, that’s completely fine ?? - keep a few interest areas in mind to explore in grad school! ???? Start engaging with your professors: Start connecting with professors whose work interests you. Set up coffee chats (virtual or in-person) to learn about their research and discuss potential work opportunities with them. ?? ?Look out for research centers in the university: Just like reaching out to professors, start identifying research centers across the university (pro tip: do not restrict yourself to the policy school). Research centers often have different recruitment processes, so reaching out to them early will give you a head start. ?? ?Be strategic about selecting courses: While policy school is a great place to explore, try to ensure your activities are directional and interconnected to build a strong career foundation. Select courses and professors that align with your interests, build in-demand skills, develop your work portfolio, and/or offer valuable networking opportunities. ?? Start connecting with current students and alumni: Start reaching out to seniors and recent graduates of your program/university. Set up coffee chats with them to get their insights on course selection, professors, internships, and more. Feel free to drop your #ProTips for #GradSchool in the comments below. To receive more such tailored advice on building a successful policy career, follow us at PolicyCareerCentral for posts every Wednesday and Saturday! #PublicPolicy #GradSchool #GradTips #CareerAdvice

Is graduate school stressful??????? I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about what life is like as a graduate student, so here’s my personal experience. In my first month, I thought the stress would be temporary since I was just settling in. Little did I know, this ride will last the next five years! ???? As a teaching and research assistant, my days are packed with running lab sessions for undergrads, working on my research, and taking courses. Even weekends, you’ll often find me in the lab running experiments or catching up on assignments. At first, I thought it was just me struggling to keep up, but after talking to my peers (at my school and others), I realized we're all in the same boat??????. The demands can make it challenging to stay connected with family and friends, not because we don’t care, but because the stress is real and relentless??. Here’s the thing: if your motivation for graduate school is financial rewards or the allure of travel, you might want to reconsider. You need to be genuinely passionate about your personal and professional growth, and truly committed to the goals you’re chasing. The interesting part is, you get the chance to delve deep into your area of interest, expanding your knowledge, solving problems, and seeing your hard work pay off when you finally get interesting results. I’m still figuring out the best way to balance it all, despite my well-planned schedules????. For those who’ve been down this road, I’d love to hear your experiences and any tips you have to offer!???????? #GradSchoolLife #PhD

Two days ago, I received a message from our head of faculty, Dr Khosro Adibkia, that simply said: "Hello, congratulations Professor! You’ve been promoted!" My initial reaction was a mix of excitement and introspection. I thought, "OK! But what will change from now? What distinguishes an #Associate_Professor from a #full_Professor? Is it the number of theses supervised, papers published, presentations delivered, grants secured, or perhaps the mentoring and the impacts made? As these questions swirled in my mind, I couldn’t help but look back on my journey with a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Starting as an Assistant Professor, I was driven by a passion for teaching and research, eager to contribute to the academic community and inspire the next generation of scholars. Over the years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with brilliant minds, both students and colleagues. Their support and insights have been invaluable. The challenges I faced along the way only strengthened my resolve, pushing me to explore new ideas and innovate in my field. Of course, this journey was not without its setbacks. There were times when a lack of experience led to missed opportunities and hard-earned lessons. These moments, though challenging, taught me resilience and adaptability, shaping me into the educator and researcher I am today. Now, as I embrace this new role, I wonder: does my new title come with a cape? Because, let's be honest, sometimes navigating academia feels like a superhero’s job! Nevertheless, this promotion is not just a personal milestone; it is a testament to the collective effort of everyone who has been a part of my journey. I am deeply grateful for the mentorship, encouragement, and opportunities that have come my way. For those in the #early_stages of their #academic_careers, I’ve learned over the years that the greatest achievement for academics is the impact they make. As I step into this new role, I am more committed than ever to advancing our academic endeavors, fostering a nurturing learning environment, and contributing to meaningful research that makes a difference. Thank you all for being a part of this incredible journey. Here’s to the next chapter! #promotion_to_full_professor #academic_career_chalange

With the new University academic year rapidly approaching, for the next 7 days I'm going to be making a post a day about University life, aimed at demystifying what academics do, and to help new students joining University get the most out of their experience. So post number 1....?The Personal Tutor? A personal tutor is a dedicated member of staff assigned to you to provide academic guidance, career advice, and personal support throughout your university experience. They are here to help you navigate challenges, celebrate your successes, and ensure you make the most of your time at university. ??Your personal tutor is not a fount of all knowledge of University procedure and support, they are a gateway to knowledge. If there is something you are unsure of, or need some guidance with - go to your personal tutor. They might not know the answer themselves, but they will know where you can get that information. ??Please don't think that this means the tutor doesn't know what they are doing because they don't have the answer and send you off to someone else. That's our role, to guide you to the right person (who might send you to someone else). We wouldn't expect you to know the role of every single member of the University, the same is true of tutors, we want to get you to who you need to see as quickly as possible. And if things are being slow, come back to your tutor - they can find out why things are taking so long. ??We aren't mind readers! If you need help and support, please come and speak to your tutor, email them, go to their office, grab them at the end of a lecture. Don't wait until your next formal meeting. ??Personal tutors want to see you succeed in your time at University, but they will hold you accountable for your learning. We want to see you reach your academic potential and go on to do fantastic amazing things. That means ensuring that you engage in all the taught activities you should do. If you don't like a type of taught activity - tell your tutor. Explain why, we want to hear how we can make that teaching better for you. Never hesitate to reach out to your personal tutor—they’re here to help you succeed! ?? #UniversityLife #StudentSupport #PersonalTutor #AcademicSuccess

Insights for Chevening Scholarship Applicants: As the deadline for the Chevening Scholarship approaches, I want to share some insights that I hope will help all applicants navigate this process. Having been in public service for several years, I still remember feeling nervous while preparing my application. Remember, no one is born an expert; we all start somewhere. Utilize the STAR Approach: Structure your experiences using the Situation, Task, Action, and Result framework. This method helps you clearly articulate your achievements and their impact. Emphasize Your Accomplishments: Highlight specific achievements that showcase your skills and potential. The selection committee seeks evidence of how your experiences have prepared you for future challenges. Align with the Scholarship’s Mission: Clearly articulate how the Chevening Scholarship will not only benefit you but also your home country and the UK. Demonstrate how your education will contribute to meaningful change in your community. Tailor Your University Choices: When discussing your chosen universities, explain why you selected them and how they align with your career goals. Mention specific programs or faculty members that resonate with your aspirations. Focus on Clarity: Ensure your essays are concise and focused on your objectives. Avoid extraneous details that may distract from your main message. Take a deep breath, trust in your journey, and follow these basic guidelines. Best of luck to everyone applying! You've got this! #CheveningScholarship #ScholarshipApplications #FCDO #GlobalLeadership

“Ang, why did you decide to pursue a Ph.D. in education?” ?? Great question ?? Roughly 1 in 10 Ph.D. graduates get a faculty position, but, we’re doing it anyway! Here’s why I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in education ?? 1. Opportunity to explore an area of study deeply ?? I’ve been interested in exploring education equity, policy, and systems since I’ve been young. Pursuing a Ph.D. allows me to explore answers and responses to my enduring questions that I couldn’t answer any other way. 2. Space to research ?? I LOVE research and data. I love going in depth on topics I’m passionate about through qualitative studies, literature reviews, case interviews, etc. I believe in the power of elevating stories and lived experiences as data, and I want to contribute to that. 3. Career outcomes ?? While I certainly have goals of being a full-time faculty member in an education, organizational change, and/or leadership program, I’m also interested in a senior leadership role in student affairs, consulting, industry research, EdTech, etc. Pursuing my Ph.D. will help open doors for me. 4. Position & time in my life ?? I know several peers who are pursuing their Ph.D. part-time while they work full-time. I don’t want to go that route. I am grateful to have the means and footing to pursue my degree full-time before starting a family or planning for my and my partner’s futures. 5. Learning is meaningful to me ?? I consider myself an enduring learner, through and through. I appreciate the opportunity to LEARN as my full-time work. My program has so many opportunities for me to explore, engage with new ideas, and collaborate with fellow students. I’m so excited for it.
