We live in a world in which everything from music concerts to restaurants are over-produced. We just came back from Las Vegas seeing Adele. The show begins with a back-up piano growing to a back-up group growing to a back-up mini-orchestra. Lights, fancy staging, a sound system with much too much bass, stuff (including small hearts) falling from the ceiling, etc. In this restaurant review, the reviewer asks the question of whether these places--that are on the World's 50 best list--serve food that people would actually want to eat. Sometimes, in food, music, movies, etc., less is more. Japanese culture recognizes this in many ways. Meanwhile, the trip to Vegas brought back memories of seeing Chuck Berry and Little Richard in venues where you could see and hear them and not be distracted with sound and light shows and stuff falling from the ceiling. #Adele #concerts #LasVegas #music #restaurants #bestlists #Japan
Everything is overwrought and overproduced these days. From gender reveals, to weddings, retirements, funerals, kids' birthday parties, Christmas. Which ratchets up expectations, leaving folks who end up with "less" feeling bad about themselves. Hence the newest phenomenon/malady: Fear of Missing Out (FOMO).
You’re such a breath of fresh air on LinkedIn, Prof Pfeffer! I was a student in your Power & Politics class at the GSB and I see you continue to tell it like it is.
More interested in doing a 5-whys on the over-production. Sincerely, an overthinker who over-engineers for over-analysis (instead of assuming what's obvious to me is correct and presuming normality is in any position to justifiably dictate relative language like that without the aforementioned analytics).
Jeff, did you ever visit Preservation Hall in New Orleans? One of the most underproduced theaters I can imagine. One dropped cigarette from an insurance claim. But it’s the heart and soul of New Orleans jazz. Some of those musicians have been doing jazz since you and I were children.
You need to go to the Sphere. You just may re-consider. Hope you’re well.
I’d think that was too much too, but I’ve been to such things and seen many absolutely loving the intesity and variety such multi media events include. Each to their own I say.
I agree!
Just a little perspective. Only 2 of the 50 are in the US, while McDonald’s has over 13000 locations. I doubt any would argue they are over-produced

9 个月The world is catering to young audiences and the venues are tailored to that group that will spend monies for fun. And that is the trends everywhere in the world. Technology advances so does the acceptance of young generations of today. Las Vegas is so transform to date than any other time and places in years since its creation in the early 1950s. So much of it, that it is nickname “the # one entertainment center of the world.” Forget about that restaurant that serves you good food. It is all about the add-ons that those hotels charges to raise up the bar of you “the audience,” of paying those non-sense restaurant bill tabs. I called it the “modern pirate robbery,” you go there in Las Vegas to enjoy and also to get rob of your hard earned monies..LOL..Then, if it doesn’t matter to you then you are a “cool guest,” to them. If you want good services and great food, then “Bahamas,” would be the best choice to relax and enjoy for your next vacation.
