Thanks to everyone for the continued conversation about the climate in downtown Raleigh and all the great ideas you have brought forth. Let's move into another era of a thriving Downtown. With all this being said I did want to take advantage of this attention for some self-promotion (I mean this is LinkedIn). What have we done to adapt and improve ourselves here at Crank Arm Brewing Company ? We have worked on overall customer experience. Increased training for staff members. Added health benefits for all employees who work over 20 hours per week including vision, dental, short-term disability and life insurance. Upgraded our POS to speed up check out times and to reduce paper waste. Worked closely with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance on the Sip n' Stroll social district and to add a Food Truck zone on Davie St. Added a spirits program that incorporates local beverage producers into our lineup. (We realize that not everyone loves beer) Added more weekly events including Music Bingo on Mondays, Trivia on Thursdays and a faster speed, longer distance ride on Sundays. Having more themed community events more frequently than twice a year or once a quarter. Added a community outreach specialist who's mission is to engage with local business and communities to find way to collaborate and to drive traffic to the tasting room. Not too long ago I had client say, “You really get us, Stu.” In this case, I’d travelled from home in Melbourne’s inner north where vegan cafes are springing up like mushrooms, to the coalfields of Queensland. The map says these two places are 2,400km+ apart, but culturally, they’re a world apart. So, to be told that “I got them” was a real moment of pride. It indicated that we’d asked good questions and properly listened to the responses. For me, one of life’s greatest compliments is to be called unassuming. I bring this approach to every project. I’m not there to judge, or to assume. I’m there to listen, to understand. I’m there (in person, always), to connect with the place and its community. I’m there to dive into why people are connected to the place they live, what makes them proud, and what they’d like to improve about their life. It can take a while to uncover these things, so often, the real insights from a chat with a local will only come to the surface a beer or two in. This is how I help uncover your place's unique identity. And it’s where I often see government strategies can be found lacking. Foundational concepts like purpose and pride, and the why behind them are given lip service, with little consideration for how it all connects to place. A good strategy is a philosophical document; one that shifts slowly, if at all as time passes. They are a constant reminder for operators and stakeholders that articulate how a community connects to place. A primary decision-making filter that ensures all efforts and initiatives contribute to a broader purpose. That’s how we help build event calendars that reflect your community’s culture and grow sustainably from within.
