?? Celebrating World Environment Day! ?? Today, on World Environment Day, we celebrate South Australia’s commitment to sustainability, land restoration, and drought resilience! ?????? Forestry is a cornerstone of South Australia's primary industries, playing a crucial role in our sustainable future: ? Sustainability in Action: Millions of softwood trees are planted annually, helping to combat land degradation, regulate climate and improve soil health. ? Economic Impact: In 2021-22, the South Australian forestry and wood products industries recorded a revenue of $1.46 billion, with the Green Triangle contributing $840 million to the state's gross regional product. The industries also employ nearly 6,500 people directly. ? Environmental Stewardship: South Australia's sustainably-grown plantations, covering 165,000 hectares, produce a wide range of timber products for both domestic use and export. Through PIRSA initiatives like Trees on Farms, we are building resilience against drought and restoring valuable natural landscapes. Together, let's support sustainable practices that protect our environment for future generations. Learn more about our Forestry initiatives here: https://ow.ly/ZCLS50S849P

?? Global Forests Need Global Governance and Market Recognition ?? In pursuing carbon targets, the role of forests cannot be overstated. Yet, despite grand pledges, we continue to fall short of halting deforestation. David Hopkins, CEO of Timber Development UK, sheds light on the crucial role of governance in sustainable forestry systems. Without strong legal frameworks, pledges remain hollow. ?? Introducing the Broader Market Recognition Coalition (BMRC) ?? Founded at the policy forum in Bali, the BMRC aims to incentivise and deliver robust tropical forest governance. It builds on the success of the Tropical Timber Accord launched at COP26 and focuses on developing and implementing national standards and verification systems. ?? Why does it matter? Proper Governance is the first step. Countries with strong forestry standards witness a drop in deforestation. The BMRC, with stakeholders from six tropical producer countries, seeks to establish a framework for international recognition of these standards, boosting trade and furthering sustainable forestry systems. ?? The BMRC website launched in November with a roadmap for action. This roadmap outlines the momentum and support producer countries need to develop their forestry systems. ?? It's time to turn pledges into action. When nations own their forestry systems and see genuine benefits, we'll progress towards a sustainable future. Kia kaha Mana Taiao Tairāwhiti (MTT) Aotearoa. As Adam Smith, the misinterpreted father of modern economics, for better or worse, noted in his Theory of Moral Sentiments, "If [justice] is removed, the great, the immense fabric of human society, that fabric which to raise and support seems in this world if I may say so has the peculiar and darling care of Nature, must in a moment crumble into atoms." #sustainableleadership In that context, the wheels of (Distributive) justice grind slowly, and they grind exceedingly finely. This NZ forestry case should remind us that ESG standards must be upheld to be credible, in New Zealand and globally, but also that it can take perseverance and tenacity to secure justice. It shows the levels of challenges that need to be overcome through successive channels and layers of enabling agencies globally. The case also evidences clearly that any citizen or representative group can take action to ensure that sustainability initiatives and industries do not inflict negative burdens on local populations while enjoying the protection of ESG standards and certifications, in this case the Forestry Stewardship Council in Germany. #sustainabledevelopmentgoals
