???? Important Update for Shippers Using the Port of Montreal ???? Starting on September 30th, nearly half of the Port of Montreal’s container capacity will be impacted as dockworkers are set to strike at two of the port’s five container terminals. This strike is expected to last through October 2nd and will target the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which account for 41% of Montreal’s total capacity. The strike is part of an ongoing conflict between the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 375 and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA). The terminals handle over 1.1 million TEUs annually, and the disruption could coincide with strikes along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts. To minimize disruption, it’s crucial to adjust your shipping schedules and inform your partners of the potential delays. US East, Gulf coast ports confident of smooth post-strike reopening Ports along the East and Gulf coasts reopened after a three-day strike ended with a tentative agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). The deal includes a 60% wage increase and extends the current contract until January 2025, allowing further negotiations. Port officials expect minimal disruptions, with backlogs clearing within days due to reduced cargo volumes. The strike's resolution lifts political pressure off the Biden administration ahead of the holiday season. However, automation, a key issue in the talks, remains unresolved and could cause further disputes in the future. Stay Informed: https://lnkd.in/eySggm5y

??US East Coast ports gear up for strike?? ??Several major ports are gearing up for a potential strike that could disrupt operations starting Oct. 1, 2024, as the current contract between the INTERNATIONAL LONGSHOREMENS ASSOCIATION and employer group United States Maritime Alliance expires at the end of the day Sept. 30. ??This has prompted port authorities to implement measures aimed at minimizing supply chain disruptions. Port of New York & New Jersey along with terminal operators and intermodal rail providers urged customers to collect all import cargo by the end of business Sept. 30. ??The #Port_of_Virginia has developed a detailed cessation plan should a work stoppage occur. Although Port Houston is not directly involved in the ongoing contract negotiations, it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to receive export cargo through Sept. 30 and plans to operate vessels and gates until 7 pm, said a report. #US #USMARITIME #VESSELS #MARITIME #SHIPPING #CARGO

We are on the brink of a tumultous port strike across the US East Coast and Gulf Coast. The domino effect of the strike is already in motion, as shippers have consciously shifted their cargo towards the US West Coast over the last month. At Silq, we have seen freight rates to the East and Gulf Coast ports from China and South Asia steadily dip all through the last two weeks of September. Major container liners, including Maersk, COSCO, and Hapag Lloyd, have announced emergency port charges (EPCs) and destination port charges (DPCs) ranging from $1,000 to $4,000. These additional fees will inevitably drive up overall freight costs, which are expected to rise daily as the strike progresses. This market report is a recap of what led to this strike, and what can be expected of it. #ILAstrike #portstrike #logistics #maritime

The strike could create a domino effect across the global supply chain, causing backlogs, equipment shortages, and increased #shipping costs. With labour contracts between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (#USMX) set to expire in September 2024, a potential strike could halt operations at U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, affect half of the US’ containerised imports and every day of a strike to cause a backlog upto ten days. ?? ???? ???????? ????????:?https://lnkd.in/daFJ3Xhn Nerijus Poskus, #USPortStrike #GlobalSupplyChain #PortBacklog #ShippingDelays #SupplyChainCrisis #FreightCongestion #PortOperations
