Colorado State University has unveiled its predictions for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, and the outlook is unprecedented. We're looking at what could be a hectic season, with expectations of 23 named storms, including 11 hurricanes, five of which could reach Category 3 or higher. This marks the most aggressive forecast in the institution's three decades of projections. Here's how Brandon Wright, our in-house Meteorologist, commented on the situation: "The driving forces behind this forecast are notably high temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and a transition to a La Ni?a weather pattern, both of which could significantly boost storm activity. A tropical disturbance near the Georgia-Florida state lines is not expected to disrupt chemical plant operations or Port of Savannah activities. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) states that the disturbance, identified as AL92, lacks the necessary organization to form a hurricane and will likely be a short-lived tropical depression upon landfall. The NHC is also monitoring potential development in the Bay of Campeche. Climate change threatens to make these storms worse, and new science makes the case for a Category 6 that begins when winds exceed 192 miles per hour. Five different storms that all formed in the past nine years would fit this designation, and to brace for more, scientists are planning to build a new hurricane lab to test these so-called Cat 6 hurricanes. Hurricane Milton's rapid intensification from a tropical storm to a 180-mph Category 5 hurricane has renewed interest in creating a new hurricane category. Several recent storms also make his point: Hurricane Patricia struck Mexico in 2015 after reaching 215 mph winds, and Hurricane Dorian crashed into the Bahamas in 2019 with 185 mph winds.

The NOAA just released their 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season predictions and it sounds like there's another good reason for homeowners to invest in a battery backup system. This is why the state is incentivizing people to have a power outage plan, so they can help take pressure off the grid during these weather events. If you already have solar, adding batteries gives you the ability to store energy for when you need it, and to continue producing energy even when temporarily disconnected from the grid.
