Looking in the mirror and seeing our members. If you don’t practice what you preach , you are a hypocrite-a fake. Seeing the need for greater knowledge of basic financial literacy and financial counselling, some of our staff looked in the mirror together-and everyone wins. You might say an ad hoc, local effort is no big deal. I get it, easy to be all wrapped up in the big numbers, shiny things, and all the noise-products, technology. But folks at SECU try to keep it simple, local and in the flesh. We found a 20 year CUNA resource on financial counselling that was still relevant (as most truths are) and the group ran with it! Before work, on a voluntary basis for months they met weekly to share (cooperate) and learn. Did I say voluntary? Well yes, that sounds familiar right? Cooperate should ring a bell too for you credit union zealots. And learning or education, back to Filene and beyond is in our DNA. Brad Roberson volunteered leading the flock. An ordained minister, he did a fine job reading the words and encouraging employees to share their own mistakes and successes from their experiences. I think I heard an amen a few times. At the end we had a graduation for the participants, Jody Beamon, Janice Vaughan, Josh Olmsted, and Phillip Jackson. My hats off and my heart is full. You showed again what makes us special-our members AND our employees/volunteers. To summarize, think Rev. Brad might approve me paraphrasing a scripture-without our purpose and our people we are only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal, even if we have all knowledge, without our members and our mission, we are nothing…. #ncsecu #cooperatives #service #CU175 #financialliteracy #financialeducation #secu #wcocu
