Food for thought, indeed. Takes me back to my grad school days where "the agenda-setting effect of mass media" was always a good starting point to lively discussion. And it has gyrated into countless real-life scenarios since - in assignment management, placement (front page or inside and above/below the fold in print; first block vs. second block in TV) and format (VO/VOB/live/preprod in TV). Now, in the digital age, everybody with a smart phone is source, producer, editor, and distribution channel of their story, often presenting opinion as fact, seeking likes and shares as a validation of the "importance" of their production. Thank you, Jared Willets for sharing your take on things to look out for, especially since it's grounded in decades of practical media experience. ?? Reminds me of our former boss, news director Peter Neumann, saying "journalists should be storytellers of facts" and a key mantra from my first journalism class "always consider the source." As civil discourse and political quagmire appear increasingly interwoven, it is all the more important to not willingly take up residence in an echo chamber of opinions one already holds dear (to avoid what psychologists call cognitive dissonance) but to instead listen critically, with open ears, from alternate sources and be willing to synthesize new information - from either "side" of the political spectrum.
