Today RMI released a new report on the benefits grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) can offer the PJM region. Some key takeaways: ?Facilitate the cost-effective interconnection of 6.6 GW of new capacity from the existing PJM queue within the next three years. ?GETs-enabled new generators and reduced congestion would reduce energy production costs by just under $1 billion in 2027, increasing to more than $1 billion in savings annually by 2030. The analysis examined the potential for GETs to facilitate the cost-effective interconnection of new generation across five PJM states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Utility Dive: PJM Floats Plan To Allow Limited Number Of Electric Generating Projects To Jump Into Interconnection Approval Process Early Next Year To Help Address Reliability Issues? https://lnkd.in/exq7XuuV

PJM has endorsed new solutions package which will increase the efficiency of CIR transfer from deactivating resources. The proposal allows replacement generation resource to apply via separate Interconnection process outside of the standard interconnection process. The Replacement Generation Interconnection process will stay as a serial process with PJM accepting applications throughout the year (no application window). However, the replacement CIRs have to be claimed within 1 year after the Actual Deactivation Date of existing resource, post which the CIRs expire. Also, the replacement resource can neither commercially operate prior to Actual Deactivation Date nor 3 years post the date, from when deactivating resource has ceased to operate. The Replacement Generation process will be expedited and projected to have a timeline of 10 months (from application submission to GIA execution). The Replacement Generation process allows all generation resources including batteries to claim the CIRs. The replacement resource has to interconnect at the same POI as the existing resource and is 100% responsible for identified network upgrades (if any). PJM is expected to file the proposal with FERC by Feb-25. The new process will facilitate developers by accelerating the process of interconnection and more importantly, reduces network upgrade cost by making use of the existing transmission infrastructure. #pjm #interconnection #capacity #replacement https://lnkd.in/dzGGgEaN

?? On July 31, 2024, the PJM Interconnection announced that the cost of capacity for most of its utilities will increase from around $29/MW-Day to $270/MW-Day, or over 800%, on June 1, 2025. The increase is driven by power plant retirements and load growth, and will impact all customers within the PJM footprint. Corporations currently enrolled in demand response programs in PJM, which can lower their peak load contribution (PLC) for next June, will reduce the impact of the capacity cost increase on their energy bills.
