Digesting the latest Deloitte CPO survey of 350 top CPOs shows some interesting insights. Here are a few of my favourite quotes. As a Procurement professional myself, these don’t come as a surprise as I’ve banged on about focusing on talent, and stopping to think “where can I add value” for a long while now. - “Spoiler alert: much of the focus is on creative operating model setup, talent management and digitization” - “High-performing procurement organisations that are leveraging outsourced talent models (e.g. hybrid managed services) are elevating and automating themselves out of tactical work to build more agile, scalable, and digitally enabled procurement operations” - “Top CPOs are recruiting the best talent” - “Collaboration and renegotiation require strong category management, good data transparency and trust” - “CFOs have agreed that cost control and reduction remain top priorities… procurement leaders must remain laser focused on this oldest of procurement goals”. - “There remains execution challenges regarding resource gaps, both in capability and capacity, and the difficulty of scaling the procurement operating model to stay in sync (No. 1 cited issue keeping CPOs awake at night). Which I translate to: - You need to look at your operating model. - You need to use expertise from outside your organisation. - You need to get access to the best talent. - Category Management is still critical. Collaborate and work with others to meet your goals. - Savings targets never go away – Ensure you’re getting value for money from your suppliers. - You need a model that gives you flexibility to scale up rapidly. It was actually refreshing to read that what we’ve created in the SmartBuyer network neatly addresses these pain points. It’s not really a coincidence, as there’s been a need for a while now.
