WRI Prize for Cities, Designing the Trophy. In 2022, our design studio had the honor of being selected on an international scale to design the trophies awarded to that year’s Prize for Cities winners. The trophy design was so well received that it was chosen as the permanent version of the award for all future editions. Aware of our responsibility as designers, we embrace a multidisciplinary approach to create deeper, more enduring connections with clients and products. By overseeing product development comprehensively, we ensure coherence throughout the design process, valuing the journey just as much as the final result. The trophy, The Mobius Strip, symbolizes the endless relationship and intricate connections between cities and nature. The design features curves and counter-curves that intertwine in an eloquent dialogue, creating a continuous path that, like life itself, has an organic flow with neither a beginning nor an end. From tannery to studio: Designskolen Kolding enters new collaboration with SPOOR A new partnership has been formed between Kolding School of Design and Denmark’s last remaining tannery, SPOOR. The partnership supports the school’s vision of being responsible and leading in high-quality materials, while also giving students the opportunity to explore and understand the entire process from raw material to finished product. The collaboration takes place in the design studio. The collaboration between Kolding School of Design and SPOOR will be particularly felt in the school’s leather studio, where SPOOR provides materials for students to work with. Here, they can experiment and gain hands-on experience with high-quality materials, allowing them to develop new design solutions with a focus on sustainability. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with top-quality materials while also learning the importance of responsible material selection in the design process. The initiative for the collaboration comes from former studio manager and now Ph.D. student, Line Rebecca Rumhult. The partnership is part of a broader focus on bringing material understanding and sustainable craftsmanship traditions closer to design education. This is particularly important at a time when both designers and consumers demand full transparency in the production process. Line Rumhult elaborates: – As designers, we have a responsibility to ensure transparency regarding the materials we use. SPOOR is a good example of this, as their leather goes through many refining stages, supported by a rich Scandinavian craft tradition. It’s crucial to respect the origin of materials and understand how they are created. This approach aligns with the craft traditions we want to pass on to our students, while also meeting the growing consumer demand for full transparency. SPOOR shares the enthusiasm for the new collaboration: – We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity that Kolding School of Design opened up for us. It’s a partnership that makes so much mutual sense. We can teach the students everything behind responsible Danish leather production – and the students get the chance to see the production up close. Christien Meindertsma, who was the first Dutch Design Awards winner in the category of Young Designer back in 2008, will share her perspective on designing for a Thriving Planet during #DDA24. ???? Christien Meindertsma explores the life of products and raw materials. Her signature approach has led to a shift towards more sustainable design practices. Her approach is characterised by its rigour, craftsmanship, and an unparalleled re-appreciation of the value that local production and underexplored resources hold for a circular economy. Blending craft and technological innovation while offering exhaustive documentation that revalues material streams, Christien dives into a deeper understanding of the materials and products surrounding us. By doing so, she encourages awareness, thought, and discussion and reveals processes that have become abstract. Her research into raw materials and everyday products reveals a network between source and consumer that has become increasingly invisible. Since graduating in 2003 from?Design Academy Eindhoven, Christien Meindertsma has continued to develop her unique approach to material research and design. In some instances, the result of her projects may be the record of a process itself, like PIG 05049, which documented all the products made from a single pig. Item by item, the research highlights the material possibilities and applications for the different properties that characterise each byproduct, revaluing it as a material stream. In others, her investigations lead to commercial products. Works such as the Flax Project (and its numerous offshoots) are also typical of her approach: Meindertsma purchased an entire harvest of a Dutch flax farmer to explore how flax products might stay more locally produced. FLOCKS Wobot works as a 3D printer using wool, allowing for discarded local European wool to be industrially processed into three-dimensional structure, without needing additional material byproducts or water. Meindertsma’s research into the undervalued quality of local wool and how to repurpose it continues, as she successfully demonstrated with De Zachte Stad. ?? Portrait by Marc de Groot.
