The Department of Education announced a timeline today for the launch of the 2025-2026 FAFSA. The department plans a limited release of the form for testing starting on Oct. 1. The FAFSA will be available to all students on or before Dec. 1 of this year. The goal, after input from students, families, colleges and many higher education stakeholders, is for a phased rollout of the form with test groups to identify problems and improve the process. The department said it plans to invite volunteers to participate in the testing phase and then to make the form available gradually over time to more applicants. This process is informed by conversations and feedback from thousands of students, institutions, and other stakeholders. The Department will invite volunteers to participate in the testing period, and over time will make the form available to an increasing number of participants, starting with hundreds and expanding to tens of thousands of applicants. This process will allow the Department to test and resolve issues before making the form available to all students and contributors. If you have been following along with this year's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you know that glitches, changes, and delays have made it difficult for high school seniors to complete their applications this year. The good news: with round-the-clock support from Reality Changers, almost all of our graduating 12th graders were able complete the form by the May 2nd deadline! We are so proud of our students & families and grateful for our staff & volunteers for working hard to meet this deadline. The not-so-good news: delays in the process have caused universities to be delayed in offering accurate award letters. This means that students aren't certain what aid schools can offer them and are unable to accurately compare their options. Students must commit by Wednesday, 5/15. Reality Changers students are having to make difficult decisions to weigh guaranteed options (like community college) against uncertain opportunities at other schools. As of today, around 40% of our 12th graders have not made a decision. Affordability is a huge factor in determining which schools a student can attend. For first-gen youth, it is sometimes the number one factor. We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to attend college. We will continue to support our college-bound students in seeking additional scholarship opportunities and will help them make the best decision with the information that is available. This may be a hurdle, but our students are on the road to greatness and we know that nothing can stop them from accomplishing their goals! #firstgen #collegeaccess #FAFSA

Amid a troubled overhaul of the federal FAFSA process, the share of Wisconsin HS seniors completing the application so far this year has plummeted. Our research finds the largest declines are at schools with greater proportions of marginalized students. These include schools with a greater share of students of color, English Learners, and economically disadvantaged students. Prior to this year, Wisconsin’s FAFSA completion rate already lagged the nation’s -- and that has remained true so far in 2024. With the clock ticking, school officials are emphasizing to students that there is still time to complete their FAFSA forms. Some districts such as Milwaukee Public Schools are regularly communicating with families that have not yet completed the FAFSA. “FAFSA drives” hosted by districts or others can galvanize completion by bringing many applicants into one room and providing completion support on the spot. Lagging FAFSA completion rates this year -- and Wisconsin’s rank among the states in completion rates -- shows there is substantial room for improvement. A successful effort could bolster college attainment, economic mobility, and educational equity.

I wrote a big article - but my LinkedIn friends - this is the short version: If you have a young person who is languishing in self-decay or perennial student in your life or you are the student who needs to finish-> January 2025 to August 2025 is the time to FINISH YOUR DEGREE Even if you've been sitting on ten-twenty years of credits that could be a degree - this is the time to strike. From what we know now our friends at the Department of Education managed - StudentAid.gov and FAFSA.gov as we know them are ready to support you for Winter/Spring and Summer Semester with Financial Aid via Pell grants, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, and any state aid plus college/uni internal Scholarships (based on FAFSA aid totals.) Once you have this in had they can NEVER take it away from you, you will get an immediate transfer as a junior into the state college or university of your choice, and you can continue life secure in a credential that will see you into a profitable career. Same for a CNA, Welding, EMS, ECE, or Cosmetology certification -> these can never be taken away from and are the first step of progression to higher roles and certification in these fields and professional work, often paid for BY your employer.?You will ALWAYS have a lucrative, available job with these certifications. I cannot emphasize this enough – You NEED to take advantage of the next 9 months of affordable, accessible college classes and funding! Things will change. Realize FAFSA aid is managed, determined, and funds distributed from the federal Department of Education and are the backbone of most university and public college's operations and salary budgets.
