Gen Zs can expect to have?as many as 17 jobs and up to seven careers?over the course of their working lives. What will those jobs be? We can scarcely predict. This oft quoted piece of data isn’t really that helpful to the young people in our charge. If you can’t see round the corners, how are you supposed to make reasoned decisions about the future? One way Redlands is shifting the dial on what “future ready” means is by helping students recognise and cultivate their transferrable skills, skills they can take into a variety of industries. Our Year 8s are exploring skills, interests and motivations and strengths, rather than job titles or industries. Thanks to all our cluster representatives who shared their considerable knowledge and to the Redlands staff who guided them through time-boxed challenges utilising cluster strengths.? Potential doesn’t always look like we expect it to. Last week, I joined a careers panel at Spear Islington to speak about my journey and working in the UK Civil Service. For context, Spear is an incredible organisation that is transforming the futures of young people aged 16–24 who are not in education, employment, or training. What inspires me about their work is that they see the potential in everyone, even when it’s far from obvious. → Got a criminal record? No qualifications? Facing mental health struggles? Spear’s doors are open wide. What's even more impressive is that they create lasting change. → 75% of graduates from their 6-week programme are still in work or education a year later! All the young people I met last week were extraordinarily determined and inspiring, but one stood out. Why? Because he reminded me so much of the young people I'd worked with in HMYOI Feltham. Once you look past his "tough" exterior and "chequered" past, you see a young man with so much untapped potential. A young man who wants to change his life and just needs someone to believe in him. Fortunately for him, he has access to just the right programme. Spear's success stories are proof that with the proper guidance, anyone can thrive. So, whatever you do and wherever you are - take a chance on someone who isn't the "finished article" because: → ???????????? ???? ???????????????????? → ?????????????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ??????
