TENSILE TESTING: ?As Any Design Engineer will tell you, all available tests to demonstrate the strength of a Part is of critical importance, before putting it through to Manufacturing. There are so many factors they must consider. Expected life cycle, stress, strain, wear, usage, Environmental or working conditions, ease and practicality of Manufacture, process and material costs, Ramifications of critical breakdown. To give a simple example of where Tensile strength testing will be of benefit and a worthwhile investment for any business. Take a simple plate of different types of metals with threaded tapped holes, threaded inserts or clearance holes with nuts attached to bolts. Now which method of fixings is the strongest, quickest and most cost-effective for Manufacturing? That type of fixing method when under Tension, Stress, Strain, Vibration can fail. What is the impact of that Failure. What happens if that Bolt or threaded insert strips, or the bolts snaps. Some threaded inserts will pull out of the plate. Some Bolts will strip. Some threads will strip. Some nuts will strip, or the bolt may break beforehand. The hardness and strength of the Bolt needs to be considered. A Din 912 12.9 Bolt has more Hardness and tensile strength than an 8.8 Bolt. However, this is not to say that the stronger Bolt is always the best option. A 12.9 Bolt may well strip the thread in the plate or Threaded insert before the Bolt itself breaks. The 8.8 bolt may lock up inside the insert or thread when stressed, elongate the Bolt, because of elasticity, before strippage of the thread or Bolt Breakage, thus giving the Bolt and insert attachment longer before Complete Detachment and separation. All these Types of tests can be done prior to Final design approval here at the Heatmac Laboratory Test facility. In addition to this testing, special Heat Treatment application and processes can be performed.
