For my students preparing to write their dissertations: The statistics show encouraging progress for women in aviation. However, further research and targeted initiatives are needed to sustain this momentum and ensure a long-term gender balance in the industry. At a glance Between 2019 and 2023, there has been a 26 per cent increase in pilot licences issued to women. There’s been a 43 per cent increase in the number of licences issued to women for commercial flying, and a 11 per cent increase for general aviation flyers. Licences for women remain under 10 per cent of total and UK Civil Aviation Authority continues big push for more women in aviation.
UK aviation industry sees highest number of licences issued to women but mountain still to climb

One of the most powerful sessions during the #wai2024 Women in Aviation International conference dealt with #sexualharassment with solid advice on your rights, what you can do and how to navigate it. Document everything even if you think it is nothing. Jenny Beatty, who has focussed on this issue for many years, has a wealth of resources on her site especially the Halt Harrasment in Aviation Checklists and Calm Comebacks to Rude Remarks. https://lnkd.in/eMheDP6P While I wrote up a short report for #aviationforwomen magazine, #WAI's mag, I thought it important to highlight the resources provided by Kathy Yodice, Jenny, Michele Halleran and Kandy Bernskoetter who helped the audience understand the definitions and recognizing the issue. The four women briefed attendees on the process of filing a complaint and mentioned the three laws protecting women in the #workforce. Kandy and Jenny tackled the sensitive issue of what to expect during an FAA medical and what is and isn't required since the Women in Aviation Advisory Board found #molestation happens there. There's a process for finding a new #aeromedical doctor if you are uncomfortable with the exam. Outside of the workshop, #womeninaviation should be following Sara Hammel, an award-winning journalist who writes The Landing covering many women who have been #harassed and #assaulted including Christine Janning and Andrea Nicole R. #pilots for Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines, respectively, who are now in the legal process. I'd like to see more sessions like this, not just at the conference but making arming women against #toxicbehaviors an annual part of each chapter's mission. We do a great job of #girlsinaviationday but we must follow through to protect the women once they get into #aviationcareers. Karlene Petitt PhD, MBA, MHS #sexualassault #toxicworkplace

Despite challenges, women continue to make significant contributions to and break down barriers in aviation. More women than ever are seeking careers as air traffic controllers, aviation mechanics, and aerospace engineers. While progress has been made to increase the numbers of women in aviation careers, there is still a long way to go. According to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots (ISA+21), only 5.2 percent of airline pilots worldwide are women. Women are still underrepresented in many areas of aviation and continue to face barriers that their male counterparts do not. Organizations like Women in Aviation International, ISA+21, The Ninety-Nines, Inc.?, International Organization of Women Pilots, FEMALE AVIATORS STICKING TOGETHER, Sisters of the Skies, Inc. 501(c)(3), and others work to advance women across the aviation industry and shape the future of aviation as diverse and inclusive. For #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate women's contributions to our industry and our profession. #WAI24 #IAmWAI

Let’s champion this narrative instead of focusing on appearances or attire to attain gender parity. Aim high; if there isn’t a female role model for your aspirations, become one for the next generation. #GenderEquality #WomenInSTEM #WomenInPower
Women make up less than 20% of the workforce in most aviation occupations: Only 5% of pilots are women and women make up about 6% of airline CEOs. And Black female pilots make up just 1% of commercial airline pilots globally. Amidst these statistics, there’s a beacon of hope. In 2019, an all-women Delta crew took to the skies with one mission: inspire young girls to chase their aviation dreams. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what women can achieve in this field. ??

Since 1987, March has been designated "Women’s History Month” by presidential proclamation and is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history, culture, and society.? ? Women?have been involved in?#aviation?and have made significant contributions to the industry since the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903. But still, the industry remains predominately men.?According to the Women in Aviation Advisory Board, women make up?less than 20%?of the workforce in most aviation occupations. ? As for the #autonomous industry, The Federal Aviation Administration’s U.S. Civil Airmen Statistics report from January 2023 shows that women currently make up only 7.9% of all certified remote pilots (just under 25,000 total in the US). In the tech industry, especially in #software development, women are scarce as well.?The percentage of women in tech companies and the software development industry is approximately 25%.? ? AlarisPro would like to recognize all women and their amazing contributions this month, especially those on our team!?We are proud to say that AlarisPro is currently made up of 50% women!?That’s not bad for a tech company in the aviation industry!?Our women team members hold positions in leadership, sales, marketing, and software development! ? We are excited about the future and look forward to seeing the number of women in our industry grow over the years! #womenshistorymonth #womeninaviation #womenintechnology

SkyWest Airline's Captain, Adva Amir, shares her experience as a female within aviation Being a woman pilot in a male-dominated world is like being a unicorn in a field of horses. It's rare, it's unique, and it makes some people do a double-take. But, like a unicorn, female pilots are just as magical and capable as their male counterparts. It's always fun to see people's reactions when they realize that the woman in the cockpit is actually the captain. And let's not forget the classic "Are you the flight attendant?" question. It's like, no Ma'am, I'm actually the person flying this plane, but I can also serve you a soda if you're nice. https://hubs.li/Q02nDB0r0 #aviationjobs #aviationcareers #aviationdaily #recruiting #pilots #aviationindustry #b1licensedengineer #nowhiring #jobopportunity #recruitment #cabincrew #flightattendant #flightcrew
