After more than 10 years, today is my final day at Gubagoo! I want to express my gratitude to every character in the story - employees, customers, partners, friends, big and small. I met so many passionate, smart, wonderful people along this journey. I won’t name names, you know who you are. ?????? While I have your attention, here’s my top 3 lessons from my Gubagoo adventure: Team is paramount. Hiring is critical, culture is critical, employee health is critical. Without team, there are no customers. And it’s hard. Probably the hardest part of building a company. Don’t hire for convenience. Keep the bar super high. If you have any concerns about a candidate, pass. If someone isn’t working out, don’t let it linger, deal with it urgently. Hire for will and ability. You can teach skills but you can’t teach attitude, passion and aptitude. Relationships matter. We humans are social animals. We want to work and hang with people that we connect with. We won and kept many customers/partners because of strong relationships. They became our good friends. Sure we had (and still have) outstanding products, but that’s only one piece of the puzzle. You will carry your relationships with you for the rest of your life. It’s one of your most valuable treasures. And the best part is that they compound. Don’t settle for surface relationships, seek deeper connections. Life’s better that way anyhow. Show up. Much of success in life is just showing up prepared, energized, ready to learn, ready to get shit done over and over again. To that end, you must take care of your health - whatever that means for you. To some it means exercise, sleep, meditation, less screens, more books, time in nature, sports, family whatever. If you aren’t feeling good, you can’t do great work. If you aren’t rested, your decision making will be impaired. You are responsible for this, not your boss, not your co-workers. If you are burned out, it’s your responsibility to do something (or change your situation). Nobody is coming to save you. I’ve seen fortunes made by simply being reliable, intelligent and consistent for long periods of time. Of course, there is much more to it. There’s frameworks, tactics, strategies, metrics, ops, sales, product, marketing, support, luck, on and on. That's for another time. Gubagoo was one of the great joys of my life and I’m so grateful that I got to do it! I’ll be starting a new company in automotive software that I can’t wait to share with you all! Today marks a special moment for me as I begin my paternity leave and take some time to focus on my growing family. It’s a truly exciting time, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be present during this important chapter of life. As a salesperson, the idea of stepping away from work for a few weeks can be daunting, especially in Q4. After all, we thrive on relationships, targets, and the constant drive to deliver results. But what I’ve realized more than ever is the importance of teamwork in making it all possible. Having the support of a strong, reliable team allows me to step away with confidence. It’s reassuring to know that my colleagues at IXOPAY are fully capable of stepping up and maintaining the momentum. - Trust in your team: I’m lucky to work with people who not only have the skills, but also care about the success of our business. This trust lets me take this time off knowing everything is in good hands. - Communication is key: Before leaving, we ensured all open opportunities were properly handed off, and expectations were set.
