Often in higher education, we are builders—constructing bridges, elevators, and pathways to success for our students. But too often, we forget to pause and admire the architecture we've designed. As administrators, we often find ourselves in back-to-back meetings, which makes it easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Students. This work is more than just tasks and agendas—it’s life-altering, family-changing, and community-building work. During my time at Florida State University, I had the incredible opportunity to see my work and advocacy directly impact students’ lives. Securing funding and developing initiatives —like the major exploration course and having a section specifically for first-gen students, or forming a research team of grad and undergrad scholars to analyze impact and publish our findings—wasn’t just about checking boxes. It was about creating pathways that have a real, lasting impact. These initiatives didn’t just stay on paper; they became vehicles for students to build confidence, find their passions, and create brighter futures. This past week, I watched three of my students reach major milestones and achieve their goals. They’re now real-life members of society, navigating the same world I’m adulting in. It’s a powerful reminder of my “why” and the true purpose behind the work we do. As administrators, those moments of impact can feel rare, but they’re deeply meaningful when they come. Grateful to be continuing this student focused work at NCCU. Here’s to building, securing the resources to do so, and pausing to admire the bridges we’ve created along the way. #HigherEd #MajorExploration #StudentSuccess #ScholarPractitioner #AcademicLeadership #PurposeDrivenWork

Combined, the hotels represent 523 keys, four restaurants, and nearly 80,000 square feet of meeting space. ?? ???????? ?????? ???????? ???????????? ????????????????????? ?? Post covid, there was much talk about the creation of a 'sticky campus'. What can be created which invites staff and students to spend more time on university grounds and what is it that makes an educational space or place memorable, enjoyable or worthy of someone's hard and precious earned time? Which environments spark joy, aid in making us more productive, happier and how can they subtly interrupt or improve someone's day, even if only for a brief moment? For me, it isn't necessarily about how I feel within spaces, more about how they affect me as I walk around them. Absorbing the beautiful architecture of the University of Leeds campus when I pop out for a coffee, catching a glimpse of the famous heron on the Roger Stevens pond or taking in the awe of the Parkinson building while hoping I don't fall up or down the steps! And it changes from season to season. As an Autumn girly, I wait with excitement every year for this particular tree to proudly display her orange coat. On the way to one of Karina Kendricks meetings recently, I found myself in the right place, at the right time. The blue skies, sunlight and lack of traffic perfectly aligned to capture one of my favourite campus spots. It quite literally brightens up my day and signals that year another exciting academic year is upon us. What are your favourite spots on your campus? #CampusExperience #Placemaking #HigherEducation #StudentExperience

We are looking forward to every aspect of our new AUDE Showcase event being held at the University of Nottingham (3 September with evening hospitality options on the 2nd). It's a chance to hear from AUDE's own special interest groups and work out how to connect your activity and projects with ours. And there's a great plenary session (synopsis below) 'System reboot', which will get you thinking about the direction of travel for estates in HE. 'Plenary 1: System reboot: A new way of thinking about 16+ education in the UK that may have a powerful impact on estates Broadly in estates we know what we have to deliver each year. There are three terms of safe, clean and secure learning and research environments for us to facilitate. We are used to the idea that summer is a busy period for us, with major projects often receiving their final push in time for the new academic year. And we are used to our activities slotting around and providing a framework for the teaching and research for which our institutions are known. But there’s a real sense at the moment that this applecart might be about to be upset. Financial constraints are headline news – the sense of a system not working for student, or taxpayer, or government. And actually not working for universities either. There is talk of the imminence of mergers, or worse. And in any likely future change scenario, estates will need to be at the very front of planning. Space change? Space reduction? Space that is increasingly removed from the historic hub of the university campus? Add to this the lifelong learning entitlement, changing pedagogy and the dramatically different tech and delivery expectations of the current generation of students, and it starts to feel like a system reboot could be coming our way. How might the schools, colleges, universities and employers of the near future collaborate to create a tertiary education system that works for all those of 16 years and older? And with less than two months having passed since the 2024 General Election, what are the early smoke signals from the government telling us about their plans for higher education?' Booking is now open, and we look forward to seeing you - subject specialists, project leads, heads of function and more. https://lnkd.in/e3ePWAHC Jane Harrison-White Corinne Merriman
