The Operational Real Estate Festival Advisory Board met earlier this week to discuss this year’s 27th June event. The discussion ranged across the expected and unexpected. Last year, we were taken aback by how controversial the term “operational real estate” was. This year, the chat was more existential for us as conference producers: too many speakers, too few speakers, too short, too long, too general, too granular. Where there was consensus, it was about the need to excite and inspire while delivering information people can act on. These are still forces that work in opposition to each other (there are plenty of informative presentations on subjects like DCF that simultaneously send you to sleep), but that is the challenge in producing an engaging programme. As always, there were some fantastic nuggets which we will use – you will have to turn up on the day to hear these! ??We thank all those who so generously gave up their time and to CMS for hosting us. Glenfinnan. It's the Wettest place in the UK but it's now a world away from the sleepy (and pretty damp) place I used to visit, as a young guy. It's a 'victim' of the tremendous success that is: Scottish Tourism. It USED to be famous as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie Land', with a rough-round-the-edges but fantastic Hotel and the best Freshwater Boat Trip in Scotland. I love both and they're definitely two of my 'Top Ten' suggestions for things to see, in Scotland. Glenfinnan still has them but they're now a lot busier and miles better. However, since Joanne Rowling wrote a series of Books, about a wee, specky English bloke, it's not really renowned as a 'White Cockade' meeting point, or even as a railway viaduct, that's a living monument to 'Concrete Bob' McAlpine. It's Harry Potter Land, complete with as much CGI, AI and everything else a global, ￡multi-billion franchise can throw at it. Loads of loot chucked at it, everywhere, except here. I travelled through Glenfinnan last week, in September. I couldn't stop there, as both Carparks were full and I no longer stay at the amazing, newly-refurbished Hotel there, as it's too busy and expensive. Even in September. As Scotland gets even more popular, the days when I used to work with The Scottish Tourist Board, to come up with ways to fill sleepy and damp places, in September, in Scotland, are distant memories. Tourism, like Scotch Whisky, is the Future for Scotland. We need to be Independent and chuck ￡millions, at both of them. The existing UK 'pot' doesn't allow us to do this. It doesn't represent Scotland, in 2024. 92% of the UK doesn't have the 'Harry Potter Viaduct' OR Scotch Whisky. It's time to stop moaning and start spending. #Scotlandisnow #ScotchWhiskyTruths
