DfT opens consultation into vehicle safety rules The Department for Transport (DfT) is seeking views on incorporating developments in international vehicle rules into the type approval scheme for Britain. The DfT says it’s committed to using international standards wherever possible and adopting a flexible approach to recognising other national standards and testing. To deliver this, it needs to update the GB type approval scheme to recognise or mandate new standards developed internationally. The consultation covers two sets of proposals. These include a group of priority proposals, where the DfT intends to make regulations through a statutory instrument as soon as possible after the consultation. It’s also seeking views on a number of areas with a view to taking them forward within a future statutory instrument on a slower timescale. The priority proposals include actions on eCall, windscreen wash and demist systems, HGV CO2 calculations, Isofix and automated lane keeping systems. For the emergency call (eCall) system, the proposed changes would follow the EU’s work to update its standards so that in the future 4G/5G technology will be fitted to EU-approved vehicles. Unless existing GB type approval regulations are also amended, eCall technical requirements will continue to be based solely on 2G/3G network provisions. This would mean vehicle manufacturers would be obliged to fit eCall systems which are not compatible with the 4G/5G services in Britain. https://lnkd.in/g3TUaMWh

Do you already know what new vehicle safety requirements the GSR2 regulation introduces? ?? ?? GSR2, the General Safety Regulation, introduces new requirements that manufacturers must meet. The new regulations require car manufacturers to equip every new vehicle with at least 2??0?? innovative safety systems and features. These changes apply to all new vehicles offered in the EU and UK markets. ?? All new vehicles, whether they are placed on the market, registered or put into service, as well as any new systems, components and separate technical units that are placed on the market or put into service, shall be appropriately approved in accordance with the requirements of the GSR2 regulation. ?? Mandatory technologies include: ?? automatic emergency braking (AEB), ?? lane departure warning system (LDWS), ?? Speed adaptation assistant (SAA), ?? Passenger protection in the event of a side impact, ?? electronic stability control (ESC). ?? What is the purpose of the GSR2 regulation and when will it be introduced? The mandatory equipment regulation for all new vehicles will come into force on 7 July 2024. According to the European Commission, the GSR2 directive can: ?? reduce road fatalities by 20%, ?? reduce serious injuries by 10%. Four New Technologies Added for 2026 Crash Safety Ratings The U.S. government’s automobile safety ratings will undergo a major update starting with the 2026 model year when regulators add new driver-assistance technologies and tests for protecting pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Nov. 18 it has finalized the changes, which Congress required under the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law. In addition to the five-star crash test ratings, the agency will add four new technologies: Pedestrian automatic emergency braking, Lane-keeping assist Blind spot warning Intervention if a driver tries to move toward a vehicle in a blind spot. ? https://lnkd.in/gASt6zeR ? More Time for HGV Operators to Meet London’s Direct Vision Standards The grace period for the London Direct Vision Standard (DVS) has been extended from three months to 6 months now with a deadline date of 4th May 2025. This extension provides more time for operators to comply with the necessary safety standards aimed at reducing road risks and enhancing visibility for HGV drivers. What does this mean for you? - More time to adapt your fleet to meet DVS requirements - Enhanced focus on road safety and compliance - Opportunity to ensure all necessary upgrades are in place without rushing It should be noted that as an operator you are still required to have the upgrade work booked in before 28th October 2024 and confirm with TfL that works will be completed by 4th May 2025.
