While we fully support this year’s #WorldHealthDay message that health is a human right, we’d like to argue it’s a right for every species on the planet. ? Getting appropriate treatment for sick and injured animals can play an important role in species conservation. ? Typically, conservation medicine tends to focus on population level interventions to help save endangered species, while caring for unwell individual animals most often falls within the sphere of traditional animal welfare work. ? Equally part of caring for all life on our planet, these two approaches overlap when there are perilously few animals left of a particular species, or where populations are especially fragmented. Conservation medicine can then legitimately intervene to help any individual animal, in the hope it will be able to return to the wild with the best chance of being able to breed and help the species continue.
