When asked what the most popular grape in Italy is, most people will answer "Sangiovese", but the Montepulciano grape is the second most planted red grape and one to know. Montepulciano tends to dominate the more mountainous and warmer eastern and southern portions of the Italian peninsula, especially in Abruzzo. It is dark and inky, yet is easy drinking and enjoyable. That is why the 2021 Febo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC is the Please The Palate wine of the week.

Behind the Lable *Vette di San Leonardo* is a Sauvignon Blanc produced by the San Leonardo winery in Trentino, Italy, a region known for its high-altitude vineyards and cool climate. The story behind this wine intertwines centuries-old winemaking traditions with the passion for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines. The San Leonardo estate itself dates back to 1724, when it was established by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family. The estate is located in the Vallagarina Valley, where the Dolomite mountains tower above, creating a unique microclimate that is ideal for producing refined and aromatic white wines. The name "Vette" refers to the peaks of these mountains, which not only provide a striking backdrop to the vineyards but also influence the wine’s character. The high-altitude vineyards, situated around 400-600 meters above sea level, benefit from the cool winds that blow down from the mountains, allowing the grapes to retain freshness and acidity while developing complex flavors. Vette di San Leonardo is known for its vibrant and crisp profile, showcasing the purity of Sauvignon Blanc with notes of citrus, green apple, and herbs, underpinned by the minerality of the region's stony soils. This wine is often seen as a tribute to the land and the environment that shape it, reflecting the estate’s commitment to sustainable practices and respect for the natural surroundings. Over the years, San Leonardo has gained recognition for both its red and white wines, with Vette standing out as an expression of the estate’s dedication to quality. It is not just a wine but a representation of the harmony between tradition, innovation, and nature in one of Italy's most picturesque wine regions. #italianwine #winediary #wineknowledge #winestory

L’Insolito 2021: The colour is medium straw. On the nose citrusy, but not very expressive. In the mouth nutty, with a freshness that makes the mouth water. The aftertaste is medium long. This Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC is made by Vicari winery in Morrro d’Alba. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico is a subzone of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in the Marche region of Italy, the oldest winegrowing areas around Jesi. Both superiore DOC and riserva DOCG wines are made within the classico zone. The use of Verdicchio has been documented in the Marche region of central Italy since the 14th Century, but there is suggestion that the variety could have originated in Veneto, where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave. Historians believe that Venetians migrated to the Marche area after the plague, bringing animals and plants, and it is thought that Verdicchio was among these. The variety adapted well to Marche's terroir. Verdicchio is a versatile variety, used both for light, easy-drinking table wines, and for more complex, ageworthy examples. It is commonly lauded by critics as being one of Italy's best white wine grape varieties. For this bottle I paid 14.50 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it during last year’s All Saints Holidays.

Dynamis Estate Wines | North Carolina 2024 ?? https://lnkd.in/eW6x2C3r There is a story behind every brand. Here is ours. Dynamis is defined as the potential to obtain limitless power. We symbolize our winemaking journey with the Greek delta. In mathematics the delta has the ability to change the value of any variable. In the same way, a combination of people, place and time can overcome any obstacle in the pursuit of perfection. Our wine represents the path to create Dynamis. Our mission at Dynamis Estate Wines is to achieve premium-quality without compromise. This philosophy drives every decision we make—from vineyard to winery to tasting lodge and everywhere in between. We hand-harvest fruit during the cool cover of darkness and pick grapes into small harvest bins to maintain fruit integrity. Careful cluster and berry sorting ensure fruit quality. Gentle destemming and fruit movement in our fermentation tanks, with an elegant selection of glassware and closures, creates a memorable tasting experience that leaves you wanting more. We handcraft our wines in small lots with the pinnacle of quality in mind and monitor every drop with surgical precision creating a time capsule in a bottle to enjoy for years to come, one vintage after another.

In Italy there are countless wineries for sale in various regions, but in the top regions they are rare and mostly only available off-market. Ask us for opportunities: www.viva-business.com Some facts: ITALY: 708,000 ha of vineyards | 20 wine-growing areas | Wine production: 50 million hectoliters of wine (43% white, 57% red). The total vineyard area of Tuscany is 58.000 hectares. The famous Brunello di Montalcino DOCG may only be grown on 1.920 hectares, the Chianti Classico only on 6.700 hectares. In Piedmont, 3 million hectoliters of wine are produced annually on a vineyard area of about 50.000 hectares. For the top wine Barolo DOCG only about 1.945 hectares are available.?

The chart below summarizes the origins that I have detected to date, along with representative markers in each space. The subject of today's post, Tenuta Boccarossa, currently helmed by Michele Calabretta and his wife Claudia, is shown as being positioned in the Comeback Kid category. I will explore that positioning in this post as well as the current standing of the winery and its wines. https://lnkd.in/ey8xTN7x

Capitoni Riserva 2019: The colour is medium ruby. On the nose prunes and stewed fruits. In the mouth soft and warm, probably mainly due to the 15% alcohol. The aftertaste is rather short. This wine is made with 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot grapes under the Orcia DOC denomination. The Orcia vineyard areas sit in the south-east of Tuscany, between the districts of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and covers the largest surface of any DOC in Tuscany. Inaugurated on Valentine’s Day of the year 2000, it is also among the youngest DOCs of Tuscany and is yet to earn itself prestige. As in the other denominations of Tuscany, Sangiovese is the leading variety in Orcia DOC as well. It must account for a minimum of 60% of the blend. To qualify as a Riserva, a Orcia wine must be aged a minimum of 24 months, of which at least 12 in oak barrels. For this bottle I paid 18 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it in Pienza during last year’s All Saints Holidays.
