Solution to try to integrate informal and formal sector for ewaste management in Egypt

Rising global affluence and consumption have led to an increase in the generation of electronic waste (#ewaste). The informal sector, prevalent in low- and middle-income countries such as #Egypt, plays an important role in the collection of e-waste, but poses risks to human health and the environment due to substandard #recycling practices. ? The new study developed by the Sustainable Recycling Industries (#SRI) Egypt project aims to establish an international benchmark for successful approaches bridging the collection gap between formal and #informal sector and to outline the best solutions to be piloted in the future as part of the SRI activities. ? The study recommends the adoption of an intermediary organisation approach, which revolves around an intermediary entity equipped with the necessary financial resources to purchase e-waste from informal collectors and subsequently facilitate its transportation or sale to formal recycling facilities. ?? It was a pleasure to have Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johann Fellner, together with Sara Neuburg and Francis Okori, represent the Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management of TU Wien at the ISWA International Solid Waste Association Congress held in Cape Town this September. As an expert in waste management and resource recovery, Dr. Fellner presented our latest development—the WaPla (Solid Waste Management Planning) Software. WaPla, which was co-finaninced by the United Nations Industrial Development (UNIDO) is specifically designed to support #African municipalities in optimizing their waste management strategies. It addresses a critical need for evidence-based planning by allowing the detailed analysis of waste flows, the associated greenhouse gas emissions, and the emissions of unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive overview of the costs of different waste management options, offering municipalities the ability to balance environmental benefits with financial feasibility. This approach provides a robust framework for cities aiming to transition towards more sustainable and integrated waste management systems. The ISWA Congress 2024 was an outstanding platform to exchange insights, discuss global waste management challenges, and explore how tools like WaPla can contribute to circular economy objectives and climate change mitigation efforts in the region and beyond. The introduction of incinerators as a waste to energy approach in Lagos- Nigeria is totally unacceptable. Incinerators are environmental polluters and highly unsustainable. They also contribute to global warming which is the main cause of climate change(one of the most pressing environmental issues in the world today).

Interesting thoughts in the Industry Barometer Waste-to-Energy 2023 on the role of #WtE in the #CircularEconomy and the consequences of the inclusion of waste incineration in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme for Carbon Dioxide from 2028, among others. As indicated at the beginning of the report, WtE will remain an indispensable pillar for waste management in Europe... especially with the existing need to improve the results of this management in the short term. Advanced waste treatment processes and technologies are a reality for the treatment of specific waste but not yet feasible for urban waste, at least from a reasonable technical and economic point of view. https://lnkd.in/dG4uCB2b
