Successful and meaningful career progression begins with that first handshake. Take our summer internship experience for example, certainly it's not for everyone, but for those looking to build a rewarding career at Sargent it's a great entry point. As with all of our training & development initiatives it oozes intentionality and authenticity; the entire program was purpose built (with major help from Meredith Brewer, "The Hammer" & intern whisperer) to help teach humility, empathy, trust building, and hard/soft skill development - things we know lead to long term success within our organization. Someday our interns will hold superintendent, project manager, project executive, and other executive level positions, we need them to lead our crews and our company the Sargent Way - people first, always. For all of the reasons outlined above the applicant screening yields far more "no's" than "yeses" - and that's ok. A crucial part of the process being successful is being completely transparent and up front with perspective interns. If we lay out all of the warts alongside all of the opportunities, positives, successes, and potential outcomes and the prospect is still interested the first hurdle of many has been cleared. In turn the result is higher retention & conversion rates, a real chance at success for the individual, and (most importantly) long term preservation of Sargent Culture. Today we'll be at the University of Maine engineering career fair looking for future Sargent leaders and keeping it as real as possible - it's just another example of Investing In People. This time it was SRCC's neighbour college I thought my experience must be pretty much similar in all internship fairs but not gonna lie there's something every time that proves me wrong. I've been to many internship fairs before, but none like Incrementum 7.0 by Daulat Ram College. Hats off to the The Placement Cell, Daulat Ram College for organizing such a huge event; they handled everything smoothly for the 40+ companies present. Initially, I doubted if any interviews would take place that day due to the plethora of options for candidates. To my surprise, we received the maximum number of responses compared to all previous internship fairs. Our team from Vishalakshi Foundation that includes me and Uttam kumar had to interview two candidates at a time, requiring us to be both fast and careful in selecting the best ones. I had the opportunity to meet HRs from various companies and network with them, making it an overall enjoyable experience. As the fall college career fair season continues, I wanted to share an interesting internship tidbit. "Employers responding to the?National Association of Colleges and Employers' (NACE’s) Job Outlook 2024?survey rate internship experience within their industry or their organization highly, and they made it clear that internship experience is the top factor they consider when deciding between two otherwise equally qualified candidates."
