Silenced Voices: A Reflection on Youth Empowerment Last week, I had the privilege to attend a study session on the transformation of Social Work through the power of Youth Work. This experience shed light on the hidden forms of youth homelessness and prompted me to reconsider the meanings of "house" versus "home". In discussions with international colleagues, we explored our shared professional experiences and practices. Yet, one pressing issue continues to resonate with me: the silenced voices of young people. When youth disengage from voting or choose vandalism as a means of expression, or even worse, when they contemplate giving up on life, their struggles often go unheard. Society must acknowledge these silent cries for help amidst typical statistics and news reports. As newly elected officials jockey for power, many young people are stepping away from this dialogue, seeking their leaders and communities online and acting out in ways that demand attention. While these actions may seem inappropriate, they signify a desperate call for recognition. Have we reached a point where the decision of another to take their own life no longer evokes an emotional response from us? I firmly believe that we can empower others only when we truly hear their voices - at home, in our communities, and beyond. Let's take a moment to stop and listen. We are surrounded by stories waiting to be heard.
