Yesterday, I was a panelist and volunteer mentor at the Futures In Justice Program in Ottawa (an initiative of the Ontario Justice Education Network), which introduces female identifying, gender fluid and non-binary youth from racialized and/or marginalized backgrounds to the legal field. I learned about the program though Jacqueline Beckles, and let me tell you: the fact that it happened the day after the U.S. election was a total godsend. My conversations with mentees were thoughtful, fun, and covered topics, like: ?How can someone fund their education? ?Is it possible to go to law school and also work part-time? ?What is it like to write the LSAT? ?What if you are someone who does not want to do public speaking? ?Can you be a lawyer and also have a family life? These are important topics, and engaging with young people in honest and authentic ways is necessary so they can make better-informed decisions. It was also very cool that panel discussions were held in a courtroom, and panelists sat at the judge's bench when it was our turn to speak. This helped participants envision a legal profession filled with leaders who look like themselves. This really matters now, more than ever. I'll admit, I'm a bit dumbfounded that I was asked to speak on a panel with Jacqueline and Justice Marlyse Dumel, both of whom are so accomplished and have distinguished careers in public service. This is not a humblebrag. As a solo practitioner, I face some stigma from those for whom a successful lawyer is one who has "made it" to partnership in a large national firm, or a leadership role in a large organization or institution. Some have assumed that I must not work with "high quality clients" (I hate this phrase with a passion, seriously), and that I must be struggling to attract clients. Sadly, I have faced this stigma by some BIPOC-led organizations who purport to be committed to anti-racism, which really, really hurts. I'd be lying if I said it doesn't still affect me when this happens. To be asked by Jacqueline to join her and Justice Dumel was a balm for the soul ?? It is so important that racialized #lawyers and others in the legal field, especially women, non-binary and gender fluid folks, create spaces where we can speak honestly without fear or shame. All speakers and mentors spoke very openly about #racism, #misogyny and other forms of oppression and setbacks that they have faced throughout their careers and continue to face. One panelist even shared a story that she had never spoken about before. This is how safe everyone felt in that space. I have never felt that way at any other event. I'm really grateful for yesterday, and I cannot wait for next year's event! P.S. The official figures show the number of black judges has remained “stubbornly at around 1 per cent for more than a decade”. Whitehall figures published last October showed that only 1.3 per cent of court judges and 1.7 per cent of tribunal judges were black, compared with 4.4 per cent of the working-age population and, according to the Bar Standards Board, 3.5 per cent of non-KC barristers. More than 89 per cent of court judges and 87 per cent of tribunal judges were classed as white, versus 77 per cent of non-KC barristers and 81 per cent of the working-age population. Our new chair started her one-year term as leader of the council, the professional body for 18,000 barristers in England and Wales this January. Her term is histiric as the first black chair to lead our body and have all female team as VC and Treasurer is an exciting. Our chair is Recirder abd a deputy high court judge. For law students, at any school, to put out a statement like this, targeting Jews for continuing harassment, bullying, physical attacks and exclusion from campus, campus facilities like libraries and outdoor spaces and worse is unequivocally unacceptable. Law students are not children and with "free speech" comes the consequences for using that freedom. I hope that hiring partners at law firms will be considering these activities in their hiring decisions. I also hope that the Grievance Committees in each Judicial Department of New York are prepared to address complaints for such conduct by bar applicants, because I can assure them, such complaints will be forthcoming. And if you think I'm overreacting, just substitute Jews with "black people" or "Asian people" or "LGBTQ persons" and tell me you would not be outraged.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud:- Birth and Early Life: Born on November 11, 1959, He comes from a distinguished legal family—his father, Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, served as Chief Justice of India. Early Education: He completed his schooling at St. Xavier's High School, Mumbai, where he was known for his academic excellence and curiosity. Undergraduate Studies: Chandrachud pursued his undergraduate degree in Economics at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, a prominent institution for liberal arts education. Postgraduate Education: He furthered his legal education by earning an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School, one of the top law schools in the world. Legal Practice: He began his legal practice in 1982 at the Bombay High Court, specializing in constitutional law, civil law, and commercial law. Renowned Advocate: Gained a reputation for his sharp legal acumen, effective advocacy, and ability to present complex cases clearly. Appointment as Additional Judge: In 2000, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court, marking the beginning of his judicial career. Permanent Judge: Just a year later, in 2001, he was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court due to his excellent judicial record. It wasn’t just his dismissive tone or the cherry-picking of studies to suit his narrative. It was the blatant disregard for the very rules that are supposed to uphold fairness and justice in our legal system. When justices like Alito “do their own research” and inject evidence that was never part of the trial record, it doesn’t just hurt the case. It erodes the foundation of trust that our legal system is built on. The court is supposed to decide cases based on the facts presented, not on personal bias or ideological goals. Yet here we are, watching rules and norms be thrown aside because the conservative majority is determined to reach their predetermined outcomes—no matter the cost. These decisions have real, tangible consequences for people like me and for trans youth in particular. These laws and cases aren’t just about “policies” or “science”; they’re about whether trans kids can access life-saving care and live as their authentic selves. And instead of focusing on the question of whether Tennessee’s law discriminates based on sex—which it clearly does—these justices are wandering off into ideological debates about gender-affirming care itself. It’s exhausting to see our rights, our bodies, and our lives treated as experiments for bad-faith arguments. Justice Kavanaugh’s “who decides?” comment felt especially irritating. It’s as if the hard-fought legal battles for equality, from desegregation to marriage rights, never happened. Let’s be clear: leaving fundamental rights to the whims of state legislatures is not neutrality. Justice Jackson’s response gave me a small glimmer of hope. Her reminder of how these same types of arguments were used to justify racial segregation in the past was powerful. It’s a reminder of what’s at stake—not just for trans people, but for anyone who has ever relied on the courts to recognize their humanity. For those of us who are trans, this isn’t just a courtroom debate. It’s about whether we can live safely and freely in a society that increasingly seems bent on stripping away our rights. When the rules are ignored, when facts are twisted, when decisions are made to fit an ideological agenda, the most vulnerable among us are the ones who suffer. So yes, the court’s disregard for its own rules matters. It’s not just about the outcomes—though those are devastating enough. It’s about the message it sends: that the system we’re supposed to trust to protect our rights isn’t interested in fairness or justice anymore. It’s interested in power. To my trans siblings and allies, let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture. This fight is far from over, and our voices matter.
