IASW has long been advocating on the various issues impacting the training, recruitment and retention of social workers in Ireland. We published a report on these issues, with recommendations, in 2022. We followed that up with a report (2024) on the specific issues and challenges in relation to social work practice placements. Both of these reports are available on the following IASW webpage: https://lnkd.in/ebDMdhx9 On 23 July 2024 Irish Examiner columnist Fergus Finlay wrote an opinion piece in that newspaper, highlighting the shortage of social workers and the negative impact on services. IASW Chairperson, Vivian Geiran, wrote a letter in response, which was published on 3 August 2024. Vivian's letter, as well as a link to Fergus Finlay's article is available here: https://lnkd.in/eEQ82dC5 Separately, Joe Mooney and colleagues in the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice at UCD had a letter on similar issues published in the The Irish Times on 29 July 2024: https://lnkd.in/erzwK3rJ Vivian Geiran, on behalf of IASW, wrote a response to that letter, published in the 'Irish Times' on 2 August 2024: https://lnkd.in/esncb6QA Dr. Joe Mooney's letter was also picked up on RTE's Drivetime radio programme (piece starts at 14:50mins in): https://lnkd.in/eWkpC-3u ? IASW will continue to advocate for the changes needed to ensure that the number of social workers available to practice in Ireland is increased, in order to fill current vacancies, provide for future service developments, reduce burnout and other issues impacting social workers themselves, as well as - most importantly - make much-needed improvements in service provision and the experiences of those requiring access to social work services. At the same time, those practicing and studying social work need to be adequately supported to do so effectively. The fact that the All-Employers Social Work Forum has been established and is working on a collaborative and strategic response to the relevant issues, as well as new developments including new pathways into social work, augurs well for the future. But it is vital that all concerned maintain focus on what needs to be done. One critical factor affecting the ability of people to access and continue in social work education programmes, is the costs involved, particularly the additional costs associated with undertaking unpaid practice placements. This issue must become a Government priority. #SocialWork #SocialWorkers #PracticePlacements #CostOfLiving

Young Carers Action Day is Wednesday, 13th March 2024. Advocating for 'Fair Futures for Young Carers' On this significant day, we spotlight the remarkable young carers in our community—true champions juggling the care of their loved ones alongside their aspirations and challenges. These young individuals exemplify extraordinary resilience and strength, often sacrificing their educational opportunities, social interactions, and mental health. ?? The Importance of Recognition: Acknowledging the critical role of young carers is essential for their well-being and the appreciation of their vital contributions. It's a step towards eliminating stigma, safeguarding their rights, and ensuring they have the support needed to succeed. ?? Call to Action: We can all make a difference. Whether by spreading awareness, pushing for policy changes, providing direct support, encouraging self-care, or celebrating their accomplishments, let's unite to support these remarkable young individuals in achieving their dreams with the recognition and support they rightly deserve. We invite you to join us in this important cause, advocating for a future where young carers are recognised and supported as they should be. Discover more and learn how you can contribute by visiting our dedicated page at https://lnkd.in/ew4RQVq6. It’s time to reconnect.?I’m inspired by the GenWell PSAs just launched this fall, with their powerful reminder of the crisis of loneliness affecting our health as individuals and communities, as well as by the call to action to find ways to meaningfully connect as an important part of the solution. (Take 30 seconds to watch). As a Board Director at #Genwell, I’ve been up close and personal with this amazing social impact organization and its mission to address the issues of social isolation, disconnection and loneliness through the power of human connection, and by doing so, create a happier, healthier world. Grounded in research that demonstrates the positive health and wellbeing outcomes for society as a whole of greater face-to-face connection, I’m convinced that this is a difference we can all make. Like others with full and fast-paced lives, I know it can be easy to lose touch, to forget to reach out to those who matter most, or to miss the signs that folks around us may be lonely and in need of support. Consider signing up, like I have, for this weekend’s ?#GenWellWeekend – (visit www.genwellweekend.org). By registering the ways you will connect with your family, friends, community – you will be part of a ripple effect of positivity that will last beyond Sept 20-22. ?These connections really do have the power to uplift spirits, strengthen communities, and transform lives. I look forward to re-connecting! #StayConnected #Community #genwellweekend2024 #humanconnection #socialisolation #leadership Pete Bombaci Paul Estey Reagan Zuzarte Jason Levine Judy Davey The Waltons Trust https://lnkd.in/gbQrwcZt

Mass-participation running events are open to everyone, but not always accessible to everyone. A One Poll survey* found a third of disabled people felt that sporting events were not set up to cater to them. Four in ten did not feel confident enough to take part. We are determined to change that! Check out our event pages on our website www.whitehead.foundation We are keen to hear from runners and prospective support runners in the Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol areas. Do you know someone with a disability or do you have a disability? It may be a neurodiverse, physical or learning disability, or a sensory impairment. If you or they want to run, we can match you with a Support Runner who will provide you with the support you need on the day, please register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/eMZSJjy2 If you are a runner and would like to enable a disabled person's ambition by supporting a runner through an event, please register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/ewqZ-69z *Reference One Poll survey

Listening to carer support professionals at the Shared Care Scotland conference today reinforced how much we in the physical activity sector could offer carers in terms of giving them short but vital breaks from their full-time and unpaid caring roles. Informal or structured physical activity could be an ideal way to relax, refuel or reconnect to people outwith the caring relationship. However, to what extent do we adapt our services to suit carers’ needs? How well do we listen to find out how we can best support their wellbeing? Are we promoting our services to potential carers - of all ages? Are we connecting to local carer support services to share what we could offer? There is so much potential for cross-sector collaboration - and so many carers who don’t even recognise themselves as such.

Yesterday with the great Edoardo Petrucci we tackled a very important topic, still often seen as a taboo in Italy: the GAP YEAR. ?????? Following my previous video on this matter, Edoardo and I decided to discuss this topic together, as it involves both of us personally, delving much deeper into the issues already touched upon in my previous content. ?? In the video, you'll find answers to all your anxieties, fears, and uncertainties regarding this challenging choice, which, however, in many cases can be the best, as emerged from our discussion. In particular, here's the structure of the video: ?? - Introduction ?? - Why the GAP YEAR? ?? - How to approach this choice? ?? - What are the next steps for us? ?? If I were to summarise this video, I'd say: "Don't be afraid to stray from the 'pre-established' tracks if the path you see in front of you is different but well-defined. Above all, approach these choices with seriousness, awareness, but also with lightness and a smile on your face because the mere fact that you're considering this problem implies that you're intelligent people asking the right questions!" ?? Go watch the video (in Italian ????) at the link: https://lnkd.in/dcG32pqz, and follow Samuele Giabardo and Edoardo Petrucci for more similar content, on education and beyond. Let's continue to build this beautiful (albeit still small) community we're all part of. ?? #education #gapyear #university #opportunities #youtube
