Yesterday I talked about a problem in the hair salon and asked ‘is it worth solving?’ I realized that hairdressers not selling retail was more of a symptom of larger challenges in the industry than the problem itself. We can see from salons that systematize their consultation process and include: Hair and scalp assessment and haircare recommendations Along with lifestyle, hair habits and hair history questions And professional advice with a simple explanation of WHY! The hairdresser has made these recommendations results in several outcomes: Happier clients More loyal clients More referrals Greater career satisfaction Better business metrics overall (ie - more money) In reality though, there’s often not enough time for all that in each appointment… So what do we do? We find ways to take shortcuts in the consultation. We ask the sort of questions that allow us to get to the desired outcome quickly Such as: What are we doing? Same as last time? Just a trim? Just the half head of foils today? Etc… Which also means we have to make assumptions and jump to conclusions without all the information. Do you see the issue? Personalization Makeup, like Finance, is all about customization to what works for you. You strategize on how you’d like to look in the near or distant future, highlight your features, and put your best foot forward. Makeup is self-care. But let’s get real for a second: The makeup universe is CONFUSING! Gone are the days of talcum powder-kajal-lipstick routines. There are a gazillion products launched on the regular and the makeup terminology changes every single day. The result??We don’t seek what we don’t understand, and self-care takes a back seat. 2 years ago, I decided to reintroduce everyday folks to makeup and skincare through a no-nonsense, all-practical workshop. No jargon about actives or passives, but just helping them make their make-up kits work for their everyday routines. That’s how Beauty 101 was born. Not only has it changed the way the participants of this workshop looked at makeup, but it helped them reconnect with themselves. I’m grateful for the many opportunities I’ve received in my career, but nothing brings me as much joy as Beauty 101. The next Beauty 101 is happening in?Mumbai on 16th March.
