Continuing my gratitude series for those who have had an impact on me —over time, I’ve come to realize that the most powerful advice I’ve received has often been the simplest, seemingly obvious, and most resilient. Yet, it makes all the difference when someone you trust shares it at the right time and in the right place, and suddenly - it just clicks. I recall my first year as a ‘team lead.’ Headed with the responsibility yet still feeling inexperienced, my only reference for what ‘leadership’ should be was what I had read and seen. How ‘should’ I lead? What should I ‘need’ to do? What if my team doesn’t ‘like’ me? What if performance drops? In a moment of panic, I messaged a senior team lead (at the time) over our office chat system, asking these questions. He seemed like the only person I felt comfortable asking, given how easily he connected with people across all levels. I vividly remember him typing: “???????? ???? ????????????????. ??????’?? ?????? ???? ???? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????????? ????????.” Twenty years on, I still remember this and am grateful for my first ‘authentic’ introduction to 'authenticity' as a concept—in communication, personal branding, and relationships. As this month comes to a close, I challenge you to look back and reflect on what you have accomplished. This is a practice that I have become accustomed to. At first I only focused on my work related accomplishments, but we can’t forget about celebrating our personal wins too. Write them down. Keep those wins in a notebook. Hang them up even. There always seems to be a push to end the year on a positive note, and for many of us, we’re constantly looking ahead at what is coming next. Its easy to forget about some of those smaller achievements when we’re focused on the next milestones in life and in our careers. Don’t forget about yourself. Be proud of YOU.
