Did you know the U.S. is the only country in the world that hasn’t adopted the international children’s rights framework? Or that young people make up the largest group in poverty in the U.S.? Further, that we incarcerate more children than any other country in the world? Not to mention, over 90% of the civil legal issues low-income youth face go unmet. In the face of these intersecting injustices, thousands of young people have mobilized and protested— more than ever before. The Peer Defense Project works so that all young people can use the law in the fight for justice and for their lives. PDP is an organization devoted to inclusive, youth-driven, and youth centered advocacy. We facilitate free legal education, develop resources, build robust networks, and connect youth leaders through the shared goal of youth empowerment and justice — all shaping a future where equity is the norm. Join us in moving justice forward by becoming a monthly donor to PDP! Every donation, big or small, contributes to building a future where youth have the legal tools to advocate for themselves and drive meaningful change. Each dollar helps us support the next generation of groundbreaking youth leaders, reach more young people that haven’t realized their full rights and power, and fuel social justice. Support our future leaders, support the Peer Defense Project!? As the summer has moved along, I have gotten deeper into the work at Brooklyn Defender Services through court observations, work on motions, trial preparation, and research assignments for open cases. I am getting a lot of first-hand experience observing hearings in family court, which has been very interesting to participate in. This week, I worked on preparing for a simultaneous permanency and motion hearing for a client. I prepared a digest for trial based on the ACS case notes available and used that to draft cross examination questions for the case planner during the hearings. To do this effectively, I also conducted research into legal arguments we were using to try to further our case, such as how certain factors in determining family reunification are defined in the law. It is exciting to learn how to prepare for trial and how to begin analyzing evidence in a way to be able to further our client’s case in court. It’s fantastic to see this call to action for barristers’ chambers to be more proactive in encouraging individuals who are care experienced , to join the Bar. Diversity is a strategic advantage for any organization. A broad range of perspectives leads to more innovative solutions and a more empathetic approach to justice. Whenever I meet barristers who have experienced being in care as children, they often remark on how rare it is to encounter others with similar backgrounds in the profession and how isolating that can be. This underscores the need for chambers to actively seek out and support these talented individuals. By doing so, we enrich our legal community and ensure it better reflects the society we serve. Let’s champion diversity and make the Bar a richer place. #Diversity #Inclusion #LegalProfession #FutureOfLaw
"Inclusion within the legal profession must extend to care experience and that goes beyond ticking a box. We need a narrative shift. We are not a group to be looked down on or pitied. We are valuable. And our value will enrich the legal profession. Provided we are given a chance." - writes Lucy Barnes, co-founder of Lawyers Who Care and pupil barrister at East Anglian Chambers. Read Lucy's story from foster care at the ages of 13 to 16 to starting pupillage at East Anglian Chambers - and setting up Lawyers Who Care along the way. Lucy says: "Instead of telling our young people to “be realistic” about a career in law, we must instead show them that we are all behind them, lifting them up to become lawyers." To support care-experienced aspiring lawyers: - Sign up your chambers as a mentorship organisation with LWC - Set up a donation to LWC - Provide paid work experience for care-experienced aspiring lawyers - Establish outreach programmes with Virtual Schools - Review your recruitment processes Read more in Lucy's blog: https://lnkd.in/eBGXv8XC #SocialMobilityDay Social Mobility Day #ShareMoments

Impact on children, young people and families 93% felt clearer about their rights after receiving advice 88% gained confidence in handling their situation 73% were very satisfied with the support provided ??We also hosted: 6 training sessions for schools and charities 3 masterclasses on children’s rights Our work highlights the urgent need to remove barriers to justice, improve legal aid access, and ensure children’s voices are heard in policy design. We believe that everyone—regardless of income—should have access to the civil legal advice and representation they need to protect their rights, their families, and their futures. Your donation this #GivingTuesday will provide essential civil legal advice and representation to individuals and families who cannot afford to pay for an attorney. Here’s how your support makes an impact: $50 funds an application for assistance at a housing or expungement clinic; $100 provides legal counseling and education for someone at the courthouse facing an eviction hearing; $250 funds an hour of courtroom representation in a hearing to obtain a domestic violence protective order; and $500 lets us finalize documents assuring that a client’s wishes for medical care will be followed and their assets disposed as they wish upon death. With your help, we can continue to be a lifeline for some of the most vulnerable Hoosiers who might otherwise face the daunting legal system alone. In a world where legal assistance is often a privilege for the few, your gift supports our vision of dignity, fairness, and equality for all people under the law – because justice shouldn’t be a privilege. ??
