Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. https://lnkd.in/gnV-8VXS

Challenges to today's society can range from understanding the impacts of climate change to recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in problem-solving. Today the negotiators at the UN climate talks in Bonn discuss how financial flows can be turned, so that they contribute to the goals of the Paris agreement. This is an important element of the climate talks, as the climate crisis can not be managed, unless all sectors and actors are moving in the right direction, towards a resilient and green future. There are many financial flows to consider, and it is a complex area, as it relates both to parties, non-state actors, and to a large extent only can be managed and controlled, outside the UN climate talks. However, I have three suggestions, for the talks today: Firstly, governments do create frameworks for investments in their countries. It could for example be laws for how national banks can invest. Imagine if there were laws, saying that banks would not be able to invest in fossil fuels. Secondly, we should remember that climate change also leads to risks. We must all adapt to these risks, and thus, investments in adaptation must be integrated and mainstreamed, in any investment which is enabled through global financial flows. Governments could consider this, and make sure that mainstreaming of adaptation becomes a criteria when rules for investments and flows are discussed. Finally, all actors, both state and non-state, should be aware that there is a historic dimension of climate change. Greenhouse gasses stay in the atmosphere, and thus we have an historic responsibility. Lets #TurnThePastIntoAction by investing in a climate resilient and green future. This is a task for companies, organisations and other stakeholders, which means that these also can become financial flows. June was characterised by extreme heat, setting records for several continents. ????? NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's global drought report for the month points to the critical need for coordinated action to mitigate the impact of drought on agriculture. Low soil moisture and groundwater levels continue to affect large agricultural areas worldwide. Satellite observations revealed stressed vegetation on most continents, indicating severe impacts on crop yields and food security. Today, the 12th of July, marks the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms. A good day to highlight this issue, which is also increasingly threatening Iraq and its people (for example: at times, one single dust storm results in thousands of people seeking medical support!). And this is only one of Iraq's many enviromental struggles... Fortunately there are tens of Civil Society Organisations active on the environment Iraq and although they face challenges as well, their enthusiasm and commitment is promising!
