At the IPC Forum at electronicaFair 2024 electronics manufacturing leaders had a panel discussion on "European Competitiveness: What policy and steps are needed for a resilient European electronics manufacturing ecosystem from silicon-to-systems." We are delighted to have the insights from Cesare Dunker, Digital Policy DG GROW, European Commission, on the current status and priorities of the EU commission. IPC much appreciates to hear the growing understanding and emphasis on the full value chain and the role of PCB and EMS industries. March's EDDI Report is out now! In March the Supply Index for Integrated Circuits dropped 2 points (-1.0%) to 191 points. This is the third consecutive month of decline since December 2023. The Industry Demand Index also had a net drop of 1 point, representing a decline of 0.6%, resulting in a cumulative total of 156 points. It was a full house in Ulm, Germany, at the 2024 EMS Forum Germany, hosted by in4ma and sponsored by IPC. Attendees discussed Europe’s #PCB production and #EMS markets. In4ma’s Dieter G. Weiss provided detailed #IndustryIntelligence on Europe’s #manufacturing industry. IPC’s Andrea Turcott provided the 120+ attendees with an overview of market evolution in Eastern European territories. Zollner’s Franz Xaver Feiner reported on the IPC initiative to promote the electronic supply chain needs to the European Commission and to advocate for a resilient, sovereign, and competitive #electronics industry in Europe, pointing out the pan-European, collective effort with many national organizations supporting this #silicontosystems initiative. #BuildElectronicsBetter

IPC Presses EU Governments on ‘Silicon-to-Systems’ Strategic Concerns: In Brussels and beyond, IPC and the European electronics manufacturing industry are making the case for a “silicon-to-systems” industrial strategy. Recently, IPC published a new report in partnership with DECISION Etudes & Conseil and IN4MA, “Securing the European Union’s Electronics Ecosystem,” which predicts a further decline in Europe’s global market share and rising risks to critical sectors, including aerospace and defense. IPC also issued a “Call to Action” supported by more than 30 companies and 15 trade associations, urging the adoption of an Electronics Manufacturing Strategy under the European Commission’s next five-year mandate. This strategy, backed by investments and policies, aims to reduce EU dependencies in semiconductors, health, and digital technologies, echoing recent European Council conclusions. January's Electronic Design to Delivery Index Report is out now! In the month of January: The Industry Supply Index reported a decline of 3 points (-1.8%), totaling 164 points this month. This is the second month of a slight decrease since November 2023. The Industry Demand Index had a net rise of 11 points, representing a growth of 8%, resulting in a cumulative total of 147 points. Since October 2023, demand has increased from 131 points (12.2%); this marks the third consecutive month of demand growth. My colleague, IPC Europe President Sanjay Huprikar, has penned an insightful and persuasive op-ed that crystallizes the opportunity in Europe to bolster the region's economic competitiveness and security through a more robust electronics industrial base. It begins, he argues, with the development of an EU Electronics Manufacturing Strategy and is followed with policy and funding initiatives that position European electronics manufacturers to address the region's alarming strategic dependencies and remain on the forefront of innovation. Strategic Challenges in Building Domestic Electronics Manufacturing: As policymakers navigate the complexities of supporting the U.S. microelectronics industry, I've been wondering: Which #electronics technologies and systems should be manufactured domestically, given their strategic importance to national security, economic competitiveness, and technological leadership? And what investments are necessary to ensure these capabilities? Right now, the U.S. is equipping our men and women in uniform with less than the best technologies because key segments of our electronics manufacturing sector lack state-of-the-practice capabilities found in Asia. This is not a problem for tomorrow; it's a pressing issue today. In my recent Q&A with SMT007 Magazine, I highlight the urgent need for modernizing facilities, fostering trusted supply chains, investing in R&D, and expanding our skilled workforce. Achieving strategic autonomy and ensuring future competitiveness requires strong collaboration between government and industry. Recommended weekend reading: SECURING THE EUROPEAN UNION’S ELECTRONICS ECOSYSTEM https://lnkd.in/gM49UJZN I rarely promote (industry) papers but this is a good one. Some of you may know that I get quickly irritated when policy makers and CEOs talk about how subsidizing wafer fabs strengthens (Europe's) "strategic autonomy", "security of supply", "resilience", etc. The reality is that you can't do a whole lot with the finished wafer. The downstream processes - back-end manufacturing, PCBs, substrates, final assembly - matter just as much as the €20 billion wafer fab. The paper from IPC , DECISION Etudes & Conseil and Dieter G. Weiss provides a great overview of Europe's dependencies in these downstream processes. Of course, like with any other paper from an industry association, take it with a grain of salt. But I, at least, appreciate the amount of quantitative data and structured overview. Enjoy. ??
