ACHE Congress Student Spotlight! ?? Alexandria Colella, a second-year MHA student, had the opportunity to attend #ACHECongress2024 in Chicago where she soaked up knowledge and made invaluable connections with industry leaders and peers alike. "I had an unforgettable experience at the ACHE 2024 Congress on Healthcare Leadership! Serving as a program assistant, I had the privilege of volunteering at the event, gaining a unique behind-the-scenes perspective while connecting with fellow students. One of the standout sessions for me was “Hot Topic: How Disruptors Are Transforming Healthcare Access and Affordability.” Panelists discussed the evolving healthcare delivery models and the disruptive influence of retailers, providing insights into the profound implications these changes hold for the U.S. healthcare system. As an individual with a keen entrepreneurial spirit in healthcare, I found this discussion particularly stimulating. I'm grateful for this enriching experience and the invaluable connections I made, and eager to apply newfound insights to drive positive change in healthcare." Alexa's enthusiasm and dedication to continuous learning and professional development exemplifies the spirit of ISAHL and what we strive to foster as a student organization. Thank you Alexa for being a valued member of ISAHL!

Tuesday marked the start of project matching, and today students submit their rankings for MIT Sloan’s Fall 2024 Healthcare Lab (H-Lab)! It's always an exciting time as students explore the long list of impactful and interesting projects and decide which resonate with them the most. Mentoring and coaching these talented, driven students is incredibly rewarding, and I can't wait to meet the teams I'll be working with this semester! Curious about what these students accomplish? Check out a post about one of the teams I mentored last year below! #MITSloan #ActionLearning
Last fall, Brownstein Consulting's Joanna Brownstein mentored students as a lecturer in the Healthcare Lab action learning class at the MIT Sloan School of Management. In this role, she worked with a team of MIT graduate students who were tasked with helping the Beth Israel Lahey Health at Home program streamline the process for patient acquisition and enrollment. Leveraging her deep expertise in successfully implementing 10+ hospital-at-home programs for large health systems, Joanna guided the team through critical decision-making processes, ultimately leading to a successful outcome for their client. “It was a real joy to work with this team and their sponsors at Beth Israel Lahey Health.? The team brought a level of energy, skill, and creativity to analyzing the issues and coming up with innovative, impactful solutions.” - Joanna Brownstein, CEO Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/e3GEpfKj

I recently was at the American College of Healthcare Executives Annual Congress in Chicago. Over the course of 3.5 days, I was able to attend over a dozen educational sessions with over 5,000 of my fellow healthcare leaders. However, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that there weren't more Chief Digital Information Officers represented at the event. I guess it could possibly be that ACHE Congress was the week after the HIMSS conference, and if CIOs / CTOs / CDIOs were going to prioritize, then I can see how HIMSS could win-out. I think as leaders in this exceptionally complex industry, this exemplifies that we should be approaching our conference / educational participation in a very deliberate and focused manner, one that is truly important to the entire executive leadership team, and one that demands collaboration and attack with a formalized plan. One of the best sessions I attended at #ACHECongress2024 was presented by Tina Freese Decker and Jason Joseph from Corewell Health, specifically discussion the alignment between CEO and CDIO. The presentation was well developed and it was obvious these two executives worked in an environment of trust and collaboration. This reminded me of the great relationship I had with my CEO, Peter Hofstetter when I was the CIO / COO at Taos Health Systems Inc., but these kinds of relationships seem to be an anomaly at many health systems. I think our CIOs, CTOs, CDIOs and others in the information, technology, and digital transformation fields need to make a concerted effort to sit down with our other executive leaders and see how expanding our personal development scope to include those organizations like the American College of Healthcare Executives would benefit us and our organizations. Likewise, if we step out of our comfort zones, perhaps that will enable us to encourage our colleagues to perhaps consider attending some of our traditional events like CHIME or HIMSS.

Healthcare is transforming. From mergers changing the industry structure to policy efforts impacting reimbursements, disruption is the rule. Health systems are the face of American medicine for most of us. These systems are at a "critical juncture as they compete with new entrants while pursuing the next frontiers in patient care and cutting-edge science.” This type of disruption requires a new kind of leader who combines knowledge of care delivery models with an in-depth understanding of a challenging and continually evolving healthcare landscape. Today's healthcare leadership demands a package of "hard" and "soft" skills, business acumen and management skills, and an understanding of organizations and people. You must combine the short-term view required for patient care decisions with a broader long-term focus on vision, business strategy, and culture. Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management and Northwestern Medicine have launched a new center; The Northwestern Medicine Kellogg Healthcare Leadership Center. The center will be a place to develop future decision-makers in healthcare. For example, my course this Fall on Health Systems Management will embed MBA students in initiatives within Northwestern Medicine where they will gain practical, hands-on experience and lend their expertise in business operations and strategy. As Dean Francesca Cornelli said, “By bridging business acumen with healthcare expertise, we are poised to redefine leadership in care delivery. Our dedication to rigorous research, education, and strategic partnerships will drive lasting impact, benefiting patients, practitioners, and the entire healthcare ecosystem.”#KelloggHealthcare; #MBA; #KelloggLeader
