?? Biotech isn’t built in isolation. We all love stories of lone genius founders making breakthroughs in their basements. But the reality? Thriving companies are products of thriving ecosystems. Why? Because the right location can mean the difference between a lonely uphill climb and an unstoppable momentum of resources, talent, and partnerships. Consider this: ?? Companies in biotech hubs (Boston, San Francisco, etc.) are 4x more likely to secure funding than those outside established life sciences clusters. ?? The branding and visibility that come with being in a strong ecosystem can shave years off your path to traction. Yet too many founders try to go it alone—fighting for resources without local investors, support networks, or access to top-tier talent. But biotech success is never a solo act. It takes a connected network of stakeholders—real estate developers, policymakers, research institutions, and investors—to build an environment where startups thrive. We believe #Atlanta has that growth potential. After all, Radyus Research was built in Atlanta. That’s why we're excited our CEO Marta New, PhD, MBA will join the Urban Land Institute Women's Leadership Initiative conversation this Wednesday with real estate innovators, city and state leaders, and other life sciences champions to discuss how cross-vertical collaboration can boost Atlanta's and Georgia’s biotech future. Biotech CEOs: Where you plant your company matters! Location is more than geography—it’s fuel for growth, innovation, and resilience. If we want to build the future of medicine, we need ecosystems that build us up. Let’s make that future happen, together. Starting right here at home! #BiotechEcosystem #AtlantaBiotech #LifeSciences #CrossSectorCollaboration
WLI members, join us on January 8th as we continue our WLI Breakfast Series! This iteration will feature insights from a distinguished panel of local experts who are shaping Atlanta's budding life sciences ecosystem - Katherine Lynch of Trammell Crow Company, Mike Moreland of FLAD, Marta New, PhD, MBA of Radyus Research, Christopher Rampton of JE Dunn Construction, and moderated by Lee Jarboe, FSMPS, CPSM of JE Dunn. Click the following link to register now: https://lnkd.in/eu9QqxGE Thanks to Erin Miracle Grable, Marissa Swanson, Lisa Jebodhsingh, and Chelsea Bremer for putting together this program.

Any real reform of NIH will make a lot of scientists cry-- the mediocre ones who thrive in the current system. Already many have taken a "sky is falling" view of even minor pauses. They pretend like study sections meet and then pass out money the next week. They pretend that NIH is not a cauldron of nepotism and favoritism preferentially funding mediocre work (this is well documented). They act like grant giving has been well studied, when it has never been subjected to randomized appraisal against alternative methods that are less onerous-- such as modified lottery. Unfortunately it will be difficult to judge the success or failure of reform from scientists' opinions, who will cry either way. I plan on looking at the details and writing about it on my substack.

Understanding the biology of Parkinson’s disease and turning that knowledge into better treatments is a complex undertaking. In the newest episode of our award-winning Parkinson’s Science POV series, scientists at MJFF discuss how they are tackling this problem from every angle. In the episode, we sit down with MJFF Chief Program Officer Sohini Chowdhury and other staff members to discuss their work, the projects they’re most proud of and their hopes for 2025. Whether it’s using cutting-edge imaging to get a picture of the disease in the brain or working with the community to develop better options to treat walking difficulties, our researchers are collaborating to discover the next wave of treatment options and close in on a cure.
