At the?regional level, the European Innovation Scoreboard places the Hovedstaden region (capital region of Copenhagen and the surrounding area) in Denmark in the lead, followed by Southern Finland, Upper Bavaria, Stockholm, Berlin and Zurich. At country level, Switzerland is ranked first in both the European Innovation Scoreboard and the GII, which is due in part to its efficient administration and the quality and research output of its universities. Switzerland also leads the field in terms of scientific publications produced in cooperation with companies and patent applications in relation to the number of inhabitants. Nevertheless, there is no reason to rejoice. Europe may have a relatively high level of research and a relatively innovative industry. However, if we look at where new companies are emerging that are valued in the billions and are thus becoming so-called unicorns, we are back to the aforementioned dominance of American and increasingly also Chinese tech companies. https://lnkd.in/da6zXQtx

Guadalajara, Mexico, dubbed the "Silicon Valley" of Mexico, stands poised to capture up to 35% of Latin America's nearshoring-derived foreign investment, according to economist Sergio Rios. However, the city's ability to fulfill this potential hinges on its real estate infrastructure. Guadalajara has responded to escalating demand by increasing its industrial park supply by 50% in Q1 2024, when compared to the same time last year. Regional innovation strategies are crucial as they leverage local strengths and resources, fostering tailored solutions that address specific economic and social challenges unique to each region. Though the context was Sweden, Sigrid Hedin's keen analysis made me believe that this approach can work on a Caribbean level. However, Jamacia is the only member of CARICOM that has a national innovation policy which makes promoting collaboration among local governments, businesses, and academic institutions to enhance the region's competitive advantage and drive sustainable economic growth, difficult and done on an ad hoc basis.
